Welding Degree and Certificate Training Classes

welding car in Hinesburg VTThere are a number of alternatives available to get training as a welder in a technical or trade school. You can receive a a certificate, a diploma or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are offered in Welding Technology or Welding Engineering, but are more advanced programs than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Following are brief explanations of the most common welding programs available in the Hinesburg VT area.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually made available by trade and technical schools and take about a year to finish. They are more hands-on training in nature, fashioned largely to teach welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or additional skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to complete and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology provides a more extensive education than the certificate or diploma while still furnishing the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

Some states and municipalities do have licensing prerequisites for welders, therefore make sure to check for your location of future employment. As needed, the welding school you select should prep you for any licensing examinations that you will need to take in addition to supplying the proper training to become a qualified welder.

Welding Certification Choices

welder working in Hinesburg VT shopThere are multiple institutions that provide welding certifications, which test the knowledge and skill level of those applying. Numerous Hinesburg VT employers not only demand a degree or certificate from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a respected organization such as the American Welding Society (AWS). A variety of certifications are available dependent on the type of work that the welder does. Some of the skills that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with certain metal thicknesses
  • Work with various kinds of welds
  • Perform in compliance with contract specifications

As formerly mentioned, many cities, states or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those mandating licensing, some additionally require certification for various types of work. Certification is also a means to demonstrate to employers that you are a highly skilled and qualified welder. So just as with licensing, look into the requirements for your local area and verify that the welding tech school you select prepares you for certification as needed.

Points to Ask Welder Trade Programs

What to ask Hinesburg VT welding schoolsWhen you have chosen the credential you would like to attain, a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to compare schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are a large number of welding trade and vocational schools in the Hinesburg VT area. That’s why it’s important to establish in advance what qualifications your selected school must have. We have previously discussed 2 significant ones that many people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As stated, although they are essential qualifications, they are not the only ones that should be looked at. After all, the school you choose is going to furnish the instruction that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So below are some additional factors you might need to evaluate before choosing a welder technical school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welder tech school you choose is accredited by either a national or a regional organization. There are two basic types of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school offers, for example Welding Technology. So make certain that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school itself. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping make sure that you obtain a quality education, the accreditation may also assist in getting financial assistance or student loans, which are often not offered in Hinesburg VT for schools that are not accredited. Finally, for those states or municipalities that require licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited also.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. A large number of welder degree or diploma programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will assist in placing you in an apprenticeship or a job after graduation. Ask if the schools you are considering help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. The schools must have partnerships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. More established schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can help students find employment and develop associations within the Hinesburg VT welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that start an instructional program and finish it. It’s crucial that the welding school you pick has a high completion rate. A lower rate could mean that the students who joined the program were dissatisfied with the instruction, the instructors, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also an indication of the caliber of training. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the program has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of Hinesburg VT contacts to help students secure employment or apprenticeships upon graduation.

Up-to-date Equipment and Facilities. After you have limited your choice of welder schools to 2 or 3 options, you should consider going to the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Confirm that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with on the job. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Hinesburg VT welding contractor if they can give you some pointers.

School Location. Although we previously briefly covered the significance of location, there are a couple of additional issues that we need to cover. You should keep in mind that unless you have the ability to relocate, the welding school you choose needs to be within driving distance of your Hinesburg VT home. If you do decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially the case for welding diploma programs offered by community colleges. Also, if the school provides an apprenticeship or job placement program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you ultimately will want to work.

Smaller Classes. Personalized instruction is important for a manual trade such as welding. It’s possible to be lost in bigger classes and not receive much personalized training. Find out what the usual class size is for the welding programs you are looking at. Inquire if you can sit in on a couple of classes so that you can witness how much personal attention the students are receiving. While there, talk with a few of the students and get their opinions. Also, chat with a few of the trainers and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Convenient Class Scheduling. Lots of folks learn a new profession while still employed at their current job. Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are convenient enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near Hinesburg VT, confirm that the schools you are considering provide those choices. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify that the school you decide on offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any because of illness, work or family emergencies.

Online Welder Degree and Certificate Programs

Hinesburg VT master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a hands-on type of trade, and therefore not extremely suitable for online training. Even so, there are a small number of online welding programs offered by certain community colleges and technical schools in the greater Hinesburg VT area that may be credited toward a certificate or degree program. These classes primarily cover such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a beginner a foundation to begin their education and training. However, the most critical point is that you can’t learn how to weld or use welding materials unless you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be accomplished online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for seasoned welders that want to advance their knowledge or possibly attain a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding certificate or degree program, be very careful and confirm that the majority of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
