How to Enroll In the Right Welding Training Program near Carbondale Colorado

Carbondale CO welding school studentFinding the right welding school near Carbondale CO is an important first step to launching your new career as a professional welder. But since there are so many schools to select from, how do you determine which ones to consider? And more notably, once you have fine tuned your choices, how do you select the best one? Many people begin by reviewing the schools that are closest to their homes. When they have found those that are within driving distance, they are drawn toward the least costly one. Yes, location and tuition cost are crucial issues when evaluating welding technical schools, but they are not the only ones. Other factors include such things as accreditation, reputation and job placement rates. So before initiating your search for a trade school to become a welder, it’s sensible to establish a list of qualifications that your chosen school must have. But before we delve into our due diligence checklist, let’s talk a little bit about how to become a welder.

Welding Certificate and Degree Training

welding car in Carbondale COThere are a number of alternatives available to get training as a welder in a trade or vocational school. You can receive a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are offered in Welding Technology or Welding Engineering, but are more advanced degrees than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also made available along with an apprenticeship program. Below are short summaries of the most prevalent welding programs available in the Carbondale CO area.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually made available by technical and trade schools and require about one year to complete. They are more hands-on training in nature, fashioned primarily to develop welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or supplemental skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to complete and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology furnishes a more extensive education than the diploma or certificate while still furnishing the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

Many states and municipalities do have licensing prerequisites for welders, so be sure to check for your location of future employment. If required, the welder school you choose should ready you for any licensing exams that you will need to pass in addition to providing the proper training to become a professional welder.

Welding Certification Alternatives

welder working in Carbondale CO shopThere are multiple organizations that offer welding certifications, which test the knowledge and skill level of those applying. A large number of Carbondale CO employers not only demand a certificate or degree from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a highly regarded agency such as the American Welding Society (AWS). A variety of certifications are available dependent on the kind of work that the welder performs. Just some of the skills that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with certain metal thicknesses
  • Work with certain kinds of welds
  • Work based on contract specifications

As earlier stated, some cities, states or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those calling for licensing, a number also require certification for different types of work. Certification is also a means to demonstrate to employers that you are an extremely skilled and qualified welder. So just as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and make sure that the welding technical school you select readies you for certification as needed.

Points to Ask Welding Tech Programs

What to ask Carbondale CO welding schoolsWhen you have chosen the credential you want to earn, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to assess schools. As you probably know, there are numerous welding vocational and trade schools in the Carbondale CO area. That’s why it’s important to decide up front what qualifications your school of choice must have. We have already covered two significant ones that many people look at first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As stated, although they are very important qualifiers, they are not the only ones that should be considered. After all, the program you select is going to provide the training that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So following are more factors you may need to evaluate before selecting a welder vocational school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welder tech school you pick is accredited by either a national or a regional organization. There are 2 basic types of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school has, for instance Welding Technology. So verify that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school itself. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping make sure that you obtain a superior education, the accreditation can also help in getting financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not offered in Carbondale CO for schools that are not accredited. Also, for those states or municipalities that require licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited as well.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. Numerous welding degree or diploma programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Various other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Find out if the schools you are reviewing assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. These schools should have partnerships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can help students find employment and establish relationships within the Carbondale CO welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that begin an educational program and complete it. It’s essential that the welding program you pick has a higher completion rate. A lower rate may signify that the students who were in the program were dissatisfied with the training, the teachers, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also an indication of the quality of training. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the program has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of Carbondale CO contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or employment upon graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. After you have limited your choice of welder schools to two or three options, you should think out visiting the campuses to look over their facilities. Make sure that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be taught on are up-to-date. In particular, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be using in the field. If you are not sure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Carbondale CO welding professional if they can give you a few suggestions.

School Location. Even though we previously briefly covered the significance of location, there are a couple of additional issues that we need to cover. You should bear in mind that unless you have the ability to move, the welder school you pick must be within driving distance of your Carbondale CO home. If you do decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, apart from relocation expenses there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly the case for welding certificate programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school offers a job placement or apprenticeship program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school needs to be in a region or state where you ultimately will wish to work.

Smaller Classes. Personalized instruction is important for a manual trade such as welding. It’s possible to be overlooked in bigger classes and not obtain much one-on-one training. Ask what the average class size is for the welding programs you are reviewing. Ask if you can attend a few classes so that you can see just how much individual attention the students are receiving. While there, speak with some of the students and get their opinions. Also, talk with some of the instructors and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Convenient Class Scheduling. Some people learn a new profession while still employed at their present job. Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near Carbondale CO, verify that the schools you are considering provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make sure that the school you pick offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make up classes if you you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.

Online Welder Courses

Carbondale CO master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a hands-on kind of vocation, and therefore not extremely compatible with training online. Having said that, there are a few online welding programs offered by various community colleges and trade schools in the greater Carbondale CO area that can be credited toward a degree or certificate program. These courses mainly cover such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a beginner a foundation to initiate their education and training. However, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or use welding materials unless you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be performed online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for seasoned welders that want to advance their knowledge or possibly obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding degree or certificate program, be very cautious and make certain that the greater part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.

However, as we have addressed in this article, there are several things that you will need to evaluate and compare among the programs you are reviewing. It’s a prerequisite that any welder school that you are considering includes a good deal of hands-on instruction. Classes need to be smaller in size and each student must have their own welding machine to train with. Classroom education should offer a real-world frame of reference, and the curriculum should be current and in-line with industry standards. Courses vary in length and the kind of credential offered, so you will have to ascertain what length of program and credential will best satisfy your needs. Every training program provides different possibilities for certification as well. Perhaps the best way to research your final list of schools is to visit each campus and speak with the teachers and students. Take the time to monitor a few classes. Inspect the campus and facilities. Make certain that you are confident that the school you decide on is the best one for you. With the right training, effort and commitment, the final result will be a new occupation as a professional welder in Carbondale CO.
