Welder Certificate and Degree Training Courses

welding car in West Rushville OHThere are several options to get training as a welder in a trade or technical school. You can earn a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced degrees than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Below are brief descriptions of the most common welding programs offered in the West Rushville OH area.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are usually made available by technical and trade schools and take about one year to complete. They are more hands-on training in nature, designed primarily to teach welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or supplemental skills for working welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to complete and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology offers a more extensive education than the diploma or certificate while still supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

Many states and municipalities do have licensing requirements for welders, so make sure to check for your location of potential employment. As needed, the welding school you pick should ready you for any licensing exams that you will need to take in addition to furnishing the suitable training to become a professional welder.

Welding Certification Options

welder working in West Rushville OH shopThere are several organizations that offer welder certifications, which test the knowledge and skill level of those applying. Many West Rushville OH employers not only expect a certificate or degree from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a renowned agency such as the American Welding Society (AWS). A wide range of certifications are available based upon the type of work that the welder does. Just some of the things that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with certain metal thicknesses
  • Work with certain kinds of welds
  • Perform according to contract specifications

As earlier stated, various cities, states or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those calling for licensing, many additionally require certification for different kinds of work. Certification is also a way to prove to employers that you are an exceptionally skilled and knowledgeable welder. So just as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and verify that the welding trade school you select prepares you for certification if needed.

What to Ask Welding Trade Programs

What to ask West Rushville OH welding schoolsWhen you have chosen the credential you want to obtain, a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to compare schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are many welding trade and vocational schools in the West Rushville OH area. That’s why it’s necessary to establish up front what qualifications your chosen school must have. We have previously discussed 2 significant ones that many people look at first, which are location and tuition cost. As mentioned, although they are essential qualifications, they are not the only ones that should be looked at. After all, the school you pick is going to furnish the training that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So below are some additional factors you may need to consider before selecting a welding technical school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welding technical school you pick is accredited by either a national or a regional agency. There are 2 basic kinds of accreditation. The school may attain Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school has, for instance Welding Technology. So make sure that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school itself. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping make sure that you get a superior education, the accreditation can also help in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available in West Rushville OH for non-accredited schools. Also, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited as well.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. A large number of welding degree or diploma programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Ask if the schools you are reviewing help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. The schools should have partnerships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. More established schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can utilize for placements. These programs can help students find employment and establish relationships within the West Rushville OH welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that start an educational program and finish it. It’s important that the welder program you pick has a higher completion rate. A low rate could mean that the students who enrolled in the program were unhappy with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the quality of training. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the program has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of West Rushville OH contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or employment after graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. Once you have narrowed down your choice of welding schools to 2 or 3 options, you should think out visiting the campuses to look over their facilities. Make sure that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be working with on the job. If you are unsure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local West Rushville OH welding contractor if they can give you some suggestions.

School Location. Although we already briefly covered the relevance of location, there are a couple of additional issues that we should deal with. You should keep in mind that unless you have the ability to move, the welder program you select needs to be within driving distance of your West Rushville OH home. If you do decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides relocation costs there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly the case for welder diploma programs offered by community colleges. Also, if the school provides a job placement or apprenticeship program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school should be in a region or state where you subsequently will want to work.

Small Classes. Personalized training is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s possible to be overlooked in bigger classes and not get much personalized training. Ask what the usual class size is for the welder programs you are looking at. Ask if you can attend a few classes so that you can experience just how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, speak with a few of the students and get their feedback. Also, speak with some of the teachers and ask what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Some people learn a new trade while still employed at their present job. Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near West Rushville OH, verify that the schools you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you pick offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the policy is to make up classes should you miss any because of illness, work or family responsibilities.

Online Welding Certificate and Degree Programs

West Rushville OH master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a hands-on type of profession, and therefore not very compatible with training online. Having said that, there are a small number of online welding courses offered by specific community colleges and technical schools in the greater West Rushville OH area that can count toward a degree or certificate program. These courses primarily deal with such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a basis to initiate their training and education. However, the most critical point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials unless you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be performed online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for seasoned welders that want to advance their knowledge or possibly obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding certificate or degree program, be extremely cautious and make sure that the majority of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
