Welding Degree and Certificate Training

welding car in Strattanville PAThere are a number of options to get training as a welder in a technical or trade school. You can earn a a certificate, a diploma or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Technology or Welding Engineering, but are more advanced programs than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also made available combined with an apprenticeship program. Following are short descriptions of the most typical welding programs available in the Strattanville PA area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by trade and technical schools and take about a year to complete. They are more hands-on training in scope, fashioned largely to teach welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or specialized skills for working welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take 2 years to finish and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology provides a more extensive education than the diploma or certificate while still furnishing the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

Many municipalities and states do have licensing prerequisites for welders, therefore be sure to check for your location of potential employment. As required, the welder school you select should ready you for any licensing examinations that you will need to pass in addition to supplying the suitable training to become a qualified welder.

Welder Certification Choices

welder working in Strattanville PA shopThere are various organizations that provide welder certifications, which assess the skill level and knowledge of those applying. A large number of Strattanville PA employers not only demand a certificate or degree from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a highly regarded organization such as the American Welding Society (AWS). A variety of certifications are available based upon the type of work that the welder does. Some of the skills that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specified metal thicknesses
  • Work with certain types of welds
  • Work based on contract specifications

As earlier stated, some states, cities or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those calling for licensing, some additionally require certification for various kinds of work. Certification is also a way to prove to employers that you are a highly skilled and qualified welder. So similarly as with licensing, look into the requirements for your location and confirm that the welding technical school you choose preps you for certification if needed.

What to Ask Welder Trade Schools

What to ask Strattanville PA welding schoolsAfter you have decided on the credential you want to earn, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can start to evaluate schools. As you can imagine, there are numerous welding trade and vocational schools in the Strattanville PA area. That’s why it’s important to determine up front what qualifications your chosen school must have. We have already covered two important ones that most people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As stated, although they are very important qualifiers, they are not the only ones that should be considered. After all, the school you select is going to furnish the education that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So below are some additional factors you may want to evaluate before selecting a welding technical school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welding technical school you decide on is accredited by either a national or a regional organization. There are two standard kinds of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school offers, for example Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school alone. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping make sure that you obtain a superior education, the accreditation can also assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable in Strattanville PA for non-accredited schools. Also, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited as well.

Job Placement and Apprenticeship Programs. Many welding degree or diploma programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will assist in placing you in an apprenticeship or a job upon graduation. Ask if the schools you are looking at help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. These schools must have relationships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. More established schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can assist students in finding employment and develop relationships within the Strattanville PA welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that enroll in an instructional program and finish it. It’s essential that the welder program you pick has a high completion rate. A lower rate might indicate that the students who joined the program were unhappy with the training, the teachers, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the caliber of training. A higher job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of Strattanville PA employer relationships to help students obtain apprenticeships or employment upon graduation.

Up-to-date Facilities and Equipment. Once you have narrowed down your selection of welding programs to two or three options, you should think out visiting the campuses to look over their facilities. Verify that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be taught on are up-to-date. In particular, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with on the job. If you are unsure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Strattanville PA welding professional if they can give you some pointers.

School Location. Although we previously briefly talked about the significance of location, there are a few additional issues that we need to deal with. You should keep in mind that unless you can move, the welding program you pick needs to be within commuting distance of your Strattanville PA home. If you do opt to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to moving costs there might be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welding degree programs offered by community colleges. Also, if the school provides an apprenticeship or job placement program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school should be in a region or state where you ultimately will want to work.

Smaller Classes. Individualized instruction is essential for a manual trade such as welding. It’s possible to get overlooked in bigger classes and not get much one-on-one instruction. Find out what the typical class size is for the welder programs you are considering. Ask if you can sit in on a couple of classes so that you can witness just how much personal attention the students are receiving. While there, talk with a few of the students and get their opinions. Similarly, talk with a couple of the instructors and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they hold.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Some people learn a new trade while still employed at their present job. Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are convenient enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evenings or on weekends near Strattanville PA, make certain that the schools you are looking at offer those options. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make up classes if you you miss any due to illness, work or family responsibilities.

Online Welder Schools

Strattanville PA master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a manual type of vocation, and therefore not extremely compatible with training online. Even so, there are some online welding classes offered by specific community colleges and trade schools in the greater Strattanville PA area that can count toward a certificate or degree program. These courses primarily deal with such subjects as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help give a novice a foundation to start their training and education. However, the most critical point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials unless you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be accomplished online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for experienced welders that would like to advance their expertise or possibly attain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding certificate or degree program, be very cautious and make sure that the bulk of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
