Welding Degree and Certificate Training Programs

welding car in Stirling NJThere are multiple alternatives available to get training as a welder in a trade or technical school. You can earn a a certificate, a diploma or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are offered in Welding Technology or Welding Engineering, but are more advanced courses than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also made available combined with an apprenticeship program. Below are brief summaries of the most common welding programs offered in the Stirling NJ area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually made available by technical and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They are more hands-on training in nature, created primarily to teach welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or specialized skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to finish and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology furnishes a more well-rounded education than the diploma or certificate while still supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

A number of municipalities and states do have licensing requirements for welders, so don’t forget to check for your location of future employment. As required, the welding school you select should prep you for any licensing exams that you will need to take in addition to providing the proper training to become a professional welder.

Welding Certification Options

welder working in Stirling NJ shopThere are a number of organizations that offer welding certifications, which assess the knowledge and skill level of those applying. A large number of Stirling NJ employers not only demand a certificate or degree from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a renowned agency such as the American Welding Society (AWS). Different certifications are offered based upon the kind of work that the welder performs. A few of the skills that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specified metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific types of welds
  • Work based on contract specifications

As previously stated, many cities, states or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those calling for licensing, some also require certification for various kinds of work. Certification is also a means to prove to employers that you are an extremely skilled and knowledgeable welder. So just as with licensing, check the requirements for your location and make certain that the welding vocational school you choose preps you for certification if needed.

Points to Ask Welding Tech Schools

What to ask Stirling NJ welding schoolsOnce you have chosen the credential you want to earn, a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to compare schools. As you probably know, there are many welding trade and vocational schools in the Stirling NJ area. That’s why it’s necessary to establish in advance what qualifications your chosen school must have. We have previously discussed 2 significant ones that many people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As mentioned, although they are essential qualifications, they are not the only ones that need to be looked at. After all, the program you pick is going to furnish the training that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So following are some additional factors you may need to evaluate before choosing a welder trade school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welder tech school you choose is accredited by either a regional or a national agency. There are two basic kinds of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school has, such as Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school alone. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping ensure that you get an excellent education, the accreditation may also help in getting financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable in Stirling NJ for non-accredited schools. Finally, for those states or municipalities that require licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited also.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. Many welder diploma or degree programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will assist in placing you in an apprenticeship or a job after graduation. Find out if the schools you are looking at help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. These schools must have associations with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can assist students in finding employment and develop associations within the Stirling NJ welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that enroll in an educational program and finish it. It’s important that the welding program you choose has a high completion rate. A reduced rate might signify that the students who were in the program were dissatisfied with the instruction, the teachers, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the quality of training. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of Stirling NJ contacts to assist students obtain apprenticeships or employment after graduation.

Up-to-date Equipment and Facilities. After you have decreased your selection of welding schools to 2 or 3 options, you should consider going to the campuses to inspect their facilities. Verify that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be taught on are up-to-date. In particular, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be working with on the job. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Stirling NJ welding professional if they can give you some pointers.

School Location. Although we previously briefly discussed the importance of location, there are a couple of additional points that we need to deal with. You should remember that unless you are able to relocate, the welding program you pick needs to be within driving distance of your Stirling NJ home. If you do opt to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides relocation costs there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly the case for welder certificate programs offered by community colleges. Furthermore, if the school provides an apprenticeship or job placement program, most likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school should be in an area or state where you subsequently will desire to work.

Smaller Classes. Personalized training is important for a manual trade such as welding. It’s possible to be overlooked in bigger classes and not obtain much personalized instruction. Ask what the average class size is for the welding schools you are reviewing. Ask if you can attend some classes so that you can see how much personal attention the students are receiving. While there, speak with some of the students and get their evaluations. Similarly, chat with some of the teachers and find out what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they have earned.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Many people learn a new trade while still working at their current job. Verify that the class schedules for the schools you are reviewing are convenient enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Stirling NJ, verify that the schools you are looking at offer those options. If you can only enroll part-time, confirm that the school you pick offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make up classes if you you miss any due to work, illness or family circumstances.

Online Welding Schools

Stirling NJ master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a manual kind of profession, and therefore not very suitable for online training. Even so, there are some online welding classes offered by specific community colleges and trade schools in the greater Stirling NJ area that can be credited toward a degree or certificate program. These classes primarily cover such subjects as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a beginner a basis to initiate their education and training. However, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials until you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be performed online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for experienced welders that want to advance their expertise or possibly obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding degree or certificate program, be very careful and confirm that the larger part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.

    Stirling station (NJ Transit)

Stirling is a NJ Transit station in the Stirling neighborhood of Long Hill Township, New Jersey along the Gladstone Branch of the Morris and Essex line. The station consists of one side platform, as well as a concrete block shelter constructed in August 1974 after the former Delaware, Lackawanna and Western Railroad depot was demolished.[4] The Erie Lackawanna Railroad demolished the old depot on August 14, 1972 without notifying then-Passaic Township.[6]

The only physical facility at this station is a cinder-block-walled, shingle-roofed bench shelter facing the track. A pay telephone and a newsstand stand nearby. The low-level side platform connects to the bypass track via a walkway over the station track, allowing passengers to access trains on both tracks. Permitted parking is also available and costs $125 per year. These permits are for parking at the Gillette, Stirling, and Millington stations.
