Welder Degree and Certificate Training

welding car in Oneida TNThere are multiple options to get training as a welder in a technical or trade school. You can obtain a a certificate, a diploma or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced programs than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Below are brief explanations of the most typical welding programs available in the Oneida TN area.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally made available by trade and technical schools and take about 1 year to complete. They are more hands-on training in nature, designed mainly to teach welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or additional skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to finish and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology offers a more well-rounded education than the certificate or diploma while still supplying the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

Some states and municipalities do have licensing requirements for welders, so be sure to check for your location of potential employment. As needed, the welding school you select should ready you for any licensing exams that you will have to take in addition to furnishing the appropriate training to become a qualified welder.

Welder Certification Options

welder working in Oneida TN shopThere are several institutions that provide welder certifications, which evaluate the knowledge and skill level of those applying. A large number of Oneida TN employers not only require a certificate or degree from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a highly regarded agency such as the American Welding Society (AWS). Different certifications are offered based upon the kind of work that the welder does. Some of the skills that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specified metal thicknesses
  • Work with various types of welds
  • Work according to contract specifications

As formerly stated, various cities, states or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those calling for licensing, some also require certification for various kinds of work. Certification is also a way to demonstrate to employers that you are an exceptionally skilled and experienced welder. So just as with licensing, look into the requirements for your local area and make sure that the welder trade school you select readies you for certification as needed.

Questions to Ask Welding Trade Schools

What to ask Oneida TN welding schoolsAfter you have decided on the credential you would like to attain, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to assess schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous welder vocational and trade schools in the Oneida TN area. That’s why it’s important to decide in advance what qualifications your selected school must have. We have previously covered 2 significant ones that most people consider first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As mentioned, although they are very important qualifiers, they are not the only ones that should be considered. After all, the program you select is going to furnish the education that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So following are more factors you might need to evaluate before selecting a welder technical school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welding technical school you choose is accredited by either a regional or a national organization. There are two basic types of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school has, such as Welding Technology. So make sure that the program you select is accredited, not just the school alone. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping ensure that you obtain a superior education, the accreditation may also assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not available in Oneida TN for non-accredited schools. Also, for those states or local governments that mandate licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited as well.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. Many welding degree or certificate programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Various other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship upon graduation. Find out if the schools you are looking at help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. These schools should have associations with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. More established schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can rely upon for referrals. These programs can help students find employment and establish associations within the Oneida TN welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that begin an instructional program and finish it. It’s crucial that the welding school you select has a higher completion rate. A lower rate may indicate that the students who enrolled in the program were unhappy with the instruction, the teachers, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the caliber of training. A higher job placement rate will not only confirm that the program has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of Oneida TN employer relationships to help students secure employment or apprenticeships after graduation.

Modern Facilities and Equipment. Once you have narrowed down your choice of welding programs to two or three options, you should think out visiting the campuses to inspect their facilities. Make sure that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be taught on are modern. In particular, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be using in the field. If you are unsure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Oneida TN welding contractor if they can give you a few suggestions.

School Location. Even though we previously briefly discussed the relevance of location, there are a couple of additional points that we should deal with. You should bear in mind that unless you can move, the welding program you pick needs to be within commuting distance of your Oneida TN home. If you do opt to attend an out-of-state school, besides relocation expenses there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially true for welding degree programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school provides a job placement or apprenticeship program, often their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you subsequently will desire to work.

Small Classes. Individualized instruction is essential for a manual trade such as welding. It’s easy to get overlooked in larger classes and not receive much personalized training. Ask what the usual class size is for the welder programs you are considering. Inquire if you can attend a few classes so that you can see how much individual attention the students are receiving. While there, talk with several of the students and get their feedback. Similarly, chat with a couple of the teachers and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Convenient Class Scheduling. Lots of folks learn a new trade while still employed at their current job. Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are considering are convenient enough to satisfy your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evenings or on weekends near Oneida TN, confirm that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you decide on offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make up classes if you you miss any because of work, sickness or family emergencies.

Online Welder Certificate and Degree Programs

Oneida TN master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a manual kind of vocation, and for that reason not very compatible with training online. Having said that, there are some online welding programs offered by certain community colleges and trade schools in the greater Oneida TN area that can be credited toward a degree or certificate program. These classes primarily cover such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a foundation to begin their training and education. Nevertheless, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials until you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be performed online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for experienced welders that would like to advance their expertise or possibly earn a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding degree or certificate program, be extremely cautious and verify that the greater part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.

Classes should be small in size and every student must have their own welding machine to train on. Classroom instruction should provide a real-world perspective, and the course of study should be up-to-date and conform with industry standards. Programs vary in length and the type of credential provided, so you will have to decide what length of program and certificate or degree will best serve your needs. Each program offers different options for certification also. Probably The ideal way to research your short list of schools is to visit each campus and talk with the students and instructors.
