Welding Degree and Certificate Training Programs

welding car in Menard ILThere are multiple options available to get training as a welder in a trade or technical school. You can receive a a certificate, a diploma or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are offered in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced programs than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Below are short descriptions of the most common welding programs offered in the Menard IL area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally made available by technical and trade schools and take about 1 year to complete. They are more hands-on training in scope, created primarily to teach welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or supplemental skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take 2 years to finish and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology furnishes a more well-rounded education than the certificate or diploma while still providing the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

A number of municipalities and states do have licensing requirements for welders, therefore be sure to find out for your location of potential employment. If required, the welder school you choose should prep you for any licensing examinations that you will have to take in addition to furnishing the proper training to become a qualified welder.

Welding Certification Alternatives

welder working in Menard IL shopThere are various organizations that offer welding certifications, which evaluate the skill level and knowledge of those applying. A large number of Menard IL employers not only expect a degree or certificate from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a renowned agency like the American Welding Society (AWS). A variety of certifications are offered based upon the type of work that the welder does. Just some of the skills that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specified metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific types of welds
  • Perform based on contract specifications

As previously stated, many states, cities or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those calling for licensing, some additionally require certification for different types of work. Certification is also a way to demonstrate to employers that you are a highly skilled and experienced welder. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your location and confirm that the welding tech school you choose preps you for certification if needed.

What to Ask Welder Trade Programs

What to ask Menard IL welding schoolsOnce you have decided on the credential you want to attain, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can start to compare schools. As you probably know, there are a large number of welding trade and technical schools in the Menard IL area. That’s why it’s essential to decide in advance what qualifications your school of choice must have. We have already covered a couple of significant ones that most people look at first, which are location and tuition cost. As stated, although they are very important qualifications, they are not the only ones that must be considered. After all, the program you choose is going to provide the instruction that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So following are more factors you might need to evaluate before selecting a welder tech school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welder tech school you pick is accredited by either a national or a regional organization. There are 2 standard types of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school offers, for example Welding Technology. So make sure that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school itself. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping make sure that you get a quality education, the accreditation may also assist in getting financial aid or student loans, which are often not offered in Menard IL for non-accredited schools. Also, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited also.

Job Assistance and Apprenticeship Programs. Many welding degree or diploma programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will help place you in an apprenticeship or a job after graduation. Ask if the schools you are reviewing assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. The schools should have associations with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can rely upon for placements. These programs can assist students in finding employment and establish associations within the Menard IL welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that start an instructional program and finish it. It’s essential that the welding program you pick has a high completion rate. A reduced rate may mean that the students who were in the program were dissatisfied with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the caliber of training. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the program has a good reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of Menard IL employer relationships to help students secure apprenticeships or employment upon graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. After you have decreased your choice of welding programs to two or three options, you should think out going to the campuses to inspect their facilities. Make sure that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are up-to-date. In particular, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be using on the job. If you are unsure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Menard IL welding professional if they can give you some tips.

School Location. Even though we already briefly discussed the significance of location, there are a couple of additional points that we need to cover. You should bear in mind that unless you have the ability to move, the welding program you pick must be within driving distance of your Menard IL home. If you do opt to attend an out-of-state school, apart from moving expenses there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welding degree programs offered by community colleges. Also, if the school offers a job placement or apprenticeship program, often their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you subsequently will desire to work.

Smaller Classes. Individualized training is important for a manual trade such as welding. It’s easy to be lost in larger classes and not get much one-on-one training. Ask what the usual class size is for the welder schools you are reviewing. Ask if you can attend a couple of classes so that you can observe just how much individual attention the students are getting. While there, talk with some of the students and get their feedback. Similarly, speak with a couple of the trainers and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Flexible Class Schedules. Some people learn a new profession while still working at their present job. Check to see that the class schedules for the programs you are looking at are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Menard IL, make sure that the schools you are assessing offer those alternatives. If you can only enroll part-time, make certain that the school you decide on offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the policy is to make up classes if you you miss any due to work, sickness or family circumstances.

Online Welder Degree and Certificate Programs

Menard IL master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a manual type of trade, and consequently not extremely compatible with training online. However, there are some online welding classes offered by specific community colleges and trade schools in the greater Menard IL area that can count toward a certificate or degree program. These classes mainly cover such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a beginner a foundation to begin their training and education. Nevertheless, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials unless you actually do it. Clearly that can’t be performed online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for experienced welders that would like to advance their expertise or possibly obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should discover an online welding certificate or degree program, be very cautious and confirm that the greater part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.

Each program offers unique options for certification as well. Probably The ideal means to research your short list of schools is to visit each campus and talk with the students and instructors.
