Welding Degree and Certificate Training Programs

welding car in Hornersville MOThere are a number of alternatives available to receive training as a welder in a trade or technical school. You can earn a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Technology or Welding Engineering, but are more advanced courses than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Below are short explanations of the most prevalent welding programs available in the Hornersville MO area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by technical and trade schools and take about 1 year to complete. They are more hands-on training in nature, created mainly to develop welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or supplemental skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to finish and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology furnishes a more well-rounded education than the certificate or diploma while still furnishing the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

A number of municipalities and states do have licensing requirements for welders, so make sure to check for your location of potential employment. As required, the welder school you choose should ready you for any licensing examinations that you will have to pass in addition to supplying the suitable training to become a qualified welder.

Welding Certification Options

welder working in Hornersville MO shopThere are several institutions that offer welder certifications, which evaluate the knowledge and skill level of those applying. Many Hornersville MO employers not only require a certificate or degree from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a respected organization like the American Welding Society (AWS). Different certifications are offered based on the kind of work that the welder does. Just some of the things that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specified metal thicknesses
  • Work with various types of welds
  • Perform according to contract specifications

As already mentioned, many cities, states or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those mandating licensing, many also require certification for various kinds of work. Certification is also a means to prove to employers that you are a highly skilled and experienced welder. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and confirm that the welding vocational school you select readies you for certification as needed.

Questions to Ask Welding Vocational Schools

What to ask Hornersville MO welding schoolsAfter you have chosen the credential you want to attain, a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to assess schools. As you probably know, there are many welding trade and technical schools in the Hornersville MO area. That’s why it’s important to decide in advance what qualifications your selected school must have. We have already covered 2 important ones that most people look at first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As stated, although they are essential qualifications, they are not the only ones that need to be looked at. After all, the program you select is going to furnish the training that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So below are some additional factors you may want to evaluate before selecting a welding tech school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welding trade school you choose is accredited by either a national or a regional agency. There are 2 basic kinds of accreditation. The school may attain Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school has, for example Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school itself. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping ensure that you receive a superior education, the accreditation may also help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not offered in Hornersville MO for non-accredited schools. Also, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited as well.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. Many welding certificate or degree programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Various other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship upon graduation. Ask if the schools you are reviewing help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. These schools should have partnerships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. Older schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can rely upon for placements. These programs can help students find employment and establish relationships within the Hornersville MO welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that begin an educational program and finish it. It’s crucial that the welder school you choose has a high completion rate. A reduced rate could mean that the students who joined the program were dissatisfied with the training, the teachers, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also an indication of the quality of training. A higher job placement rate will not only confirm that the program has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of Hornersville MO contacts to assist students secure apprenticeships or employment upon graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. After you have limited your selection of welder programs to 2 or 3 possibilities, you should think out visiting the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Verify that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be taught on are modern. Specifically, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be using on the job. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Hornersville MO welding professional if they can give you some tips.

School Location. Although we previously briefly talked about the significance of location, there are a few additional issues that we need to cover. You should bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the welding program you select must be within driving distance of your Hornersville MO home. If you do choose to attend an out-of-state school, apart from relocation expenses there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially true for welding degree programs offered by community colleges. Also, if the school offers a job placement or apprenticeship program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you subsequently will wish to work.

Smaller Classes. Individualized instruction is important for a manual trade such as welding. It’s possible to get lost in larger classes and not obtain much one-on-one training. Ask what the typical class size is for the welding programs you are looking at. Inquire if you can sit in on some classes so that you can see just how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, talk with several of the students and get their evaluations. Also, talk to a few of the teachers and find out what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they hold.

Convenient Class Scheduling. Lots of folks learn a new trade while still employed at their current job. Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are convenient enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near Hornersville MO, make sure that the schools you are considering provide those alternatives. If you can only enroll part-time, confirm that the school you pick offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

Online Welder Training Programs

Hornersville MO master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a manual kind of trade, and therefore not extremely compatible with training online. Having said that, there are a few online welding courses offered by various community colleges and vocational schools in the greater Hornersville MO area that may be credited toward a certificate or degree program. These courses mainly cover such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help give a novice a foundation to initiate their training and education. Nevertheless, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials until you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be done online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for experienced welders that would like to advance their expertise or perhaps earn a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding certificate or degree program, be very careful and verify that the larger part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
