Welder Degree and Certificate Training Programs

welding car in Hermon NYThere are multiple alternatives available to obtain training as a welder in a technical or trade school. You can obtain a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Technology or Welding Engineering, but are more advanced programs than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered along with an apprenticeship program. Following are brief explanations of the most prevalent welding programs offered in the Hermon NY area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually made available by trade and technical schools and require about a year to finish. They are more hands-on training in nature, created mainly to develop welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or specialized skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take 2 years to complete and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology provides a more extensive education than the certificate or diploma while still furnishing the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

Some municipalities and states do have licensing prerequisites for welders, so be sure to check for your location of future employment. If required, the welding school you choose should ready you for any licensing exams that you will have to pass in addition to supplying the appropriate training to become a professional welder.

Welding Certification Choices

welder working in Hermon NY shopThere are multiple organizations that offer welding certifications, which assess the skill level and knowledge of those applying. Numerous Hermon NY employers not only require a degree or certificate from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a highly regarded organization like the American Welding Society (AWS). A wide range of certifications are offered based on the type of work that the welder does. Some of the skills that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specified metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific kinds of welds
  • Operate in compliance with contract specifications

As earlier stated, many states, cities or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those requiring licensing, many also require certification for different types of work. Certification is also a means to prove to employers that you are a highly skilled and qualified welder. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your location and confirm that the welding tech school you choose prepares you for certification if needed.

Points to Ask Welding Trade Programs

What to ask Hermon NY welding schoolsOnce you have decided on the credential you want to obtain, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to compare schools. As you probably know, there are many welding vocational and trade schools in the Hermon NY area. That’s why it’s important to establish up front what qualifications your chosen school must have. We have previously discussed two important ones that most people look at first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As stated, although they are essential qualifiers, they are not the only ones that should be considered. After all, the school you decide on is going to furnish the instruction that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So following are some additional factors you may want to consider before selecting a welder vocational school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welder vocational school you pick is accredited by either a national or a regional agency. There are 2 standard types of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a single program the school offers, for instance Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school itself. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping ensure that you get a superior education, the accreditation can also assist in getting financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available in Hermon NY for non-accredited schools. Finally, for those states or local governments that require licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited also.

Apprenticeship and Job Placement Programs. Many welding degree or certificate programs are provided combined with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will assist in placing you in a job or an apprenticeship upon graduation. Find out if the schools you are reviewing help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. The schools must have relationships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. More established schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can assist students in finding employment and establish associations within the Hermon NY welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that start an educational program and finish it. It’s important that the welding program you pick has a higher completion rate. A low rate may indicate that the students who joined the program were dissatisfied with the instruction, the teachers, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also an indication of the quality of training. A high job placement rate will not only verify that the program has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of Hermon NY contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or employment after graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. Once you have decreased your selection of welder programs to two or three options, you should consider visiting the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Make sure that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be taught on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with on the job. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Hermon NY welding professional if they can give you some suggestions.

School Location. Although we previously briefly talked about the significance of location, there are a couple of additional points that we should cover. You should keep in mind that unless you have the ability to move, the welder school you choose must be within commuting distance of your Hermon NY home. If you do decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially true for welder degree programs offered by community colleges. Furthermore, if the school provides an apprenticeship or job placement program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school should be in an area or state where you ultimately will desire to work.

Smaller Classes. Individualized training is important for a manual trade such as welding. It’s easy to get lost in larger classes and not obtain much personalized instruction. Ask what the typical class size is for the welding programs you are reviewing. Inquire if you can sit in on a couple of classes so that you can witness how much personal attention the students are receiving. While there, speak with several of the students and get their evaluations. Similarly, talk to some of the instructors and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they hold.

Convenient Class Schedules. Many people learn a new trade while still employed at their present job. Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are looking at are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Hermon NY, make sure that the schools you are looking at provide those alternatives. If you can only attend part-time, verify that the school you decide on offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

Online Welding Schools

Hermon NY master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a hands-on type of vocation, and therefore not very compatible with online training. Even so, there are some online welding programs offered by various community colleges and technical schools in the greater Hermon NY area that can be credited toward a degree or certificate program. These classes mainly deal with such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a basis to begin their training and education. Nevertheless, the most critical point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials unless you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be done online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for experienced welders that want to advance their knowledge or perhaps attain a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding degree or certificate program, be extremely cautious and confirm that the greater part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
