Welder Certificate and Degree Programs

welding car in Cascade MTThere are several options available to receive training as a welder in a technical or trade school. You can obtain a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced programs than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Below are short descriptions of the most prevalent welding programs available in the Cascade MT area.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by trade and technical schools and take about 1 year to finish. They are more hands-on training in scope, created largely to teach welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or additional skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take 2 years to finish and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology furnishes a more extensive education than the diploma or certificate while still supplying the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

Some states and municipalities do have licensing requirements for welders, therefore make sure to find out for your location of future employment. If needed, the welder school you choose should prep you for any licensing examinations that you will need to pass in addition to furnishing the appropriate training to become a qualified welder.

Welder Certification Alternatives

welder working in Cascade MT shopThere are a number of institutions that offer welding certifications, which test the knowledge and skill level of those applying. A large number of Cascade MT employers not only demand a degree or certificate from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a highly regarded agency such as the American Welding Society (AWS). A variety of certifications are available based upon the type of work that the welder performs. Just some of the things that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific types of welds
  • Work based on contract specifications

As previously mentioned, various cities, states or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those mandating licensing, some additionally require certification for various kinds of work. Certification is also a means to prove to employers that you are a highly skilled and knowledgeable welder. So similarly as with licensing, look into the requirements for your local area and make certain that the welding technical school you choose readies you for certification as needed.

Subjects to Ask Welder Technical Programs

What to ask Cascade MT welding schoolsAfter you have chosen the credential you want to earn, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to assess schools. As you probably know, there are many welding vocational and trade schools in the Cascade MT area. That’s why it’s important to establish in advance what qualifications your school of choice must have. We have already discussed a couple of significant ones that most people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As mentioned, although they are very important qualifications, they are not the only ones that must be considered. After all, the program you choose is going to provide the training that will be the foundation of your new vocation as a welder. So following are more factors you may want to consider before selecting a welding vocational school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welding vocational school you choose is accredited by either a regional or a national organization. There are two basic kinds of accreditation. The school may attain Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school offers, such as Welding Technology. So make sure that the program you select is accredited, not just the school alone. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping make sure that you obtain a quality education, the accreditation might also assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available in Cascade MT for non-accredited schools. Finally, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited also.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. A large number of welding diploma or degree programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Various other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Ask if the schools you are considering help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. The schools should have relationships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can rely upon for referrals. These programs can assist students in finding employment and establish associations within the Cascade MT welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that enroll in an academic program and complete it. It’s essential that the welder program you pick has a high completion rate. A reduced rate could indicate that the students who were in the program were unhappy with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also an indication of the caliber of training. A higher job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of Cascade MT employer relationships to help students obtain apprenticeships or employment upon graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. After you have narrowed down your selection of welding schools to two or three possibilities, you should think out going to the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Verify that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are modern. Specifically, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be using in the field. If you are unsure what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Cascade MT welding contractor if they can give you some tips.

School Location. Even though we previously briefly talked about the significance of location, there are a couple of additional points that we should deal with. You should remember that unless you can move, the welding program you select must be within commuting distance of your Cascade MT home. If you do choose to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation costs there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly the case for welder certificate programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school provides an apprenticeship or job placement program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school should be in a region or state where you subsequently will wish to work.

Small Classes. Individualized training is important for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s easy to get lost in bigger classes and not receive much personalized instruction. Find out what the typical class size is for the welding schools you are reviewing. Inquire if you can attend a couple of classes so that you can witness just how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, speak with some of the students and get their evaluations. Also, talk with a few of the trainers and ask what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they have earned.

Flexible Class Schedules. Some people learn a new profession while still working at their present job. Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are considering are convenient enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Cascade MT, make sure that the schools you are assessing provide those choices. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, verify that the school you choose offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the protocol is to make up classes if you you miss any because of illness, work or family circumstances.

Online Welding Training Programs

Cascade MT master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a hands-on type of vocation, and therefore not very suitable for online training. Even so, there are a small number of online welding classes offered by various community colleges and technical schools in the greater Cascade MT area that may be credited toward a certificate or degree program. These classes mainly deal with such subjects as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help give a beginner a basis to begin their training and education. Nevertheless, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials unless you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be done online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for experienced welders that would like to advance their knowledge or possibly earn a more advanced degree. So if you should discover an online welding degree or certificate program, be very cautious and confirm that the greater part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.

Classes should be smaller in size and each student should have their own welding machine to train on. Classroom instruction should offer a real-world context, and the curriculum should be current and conform with industry standards.
