  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by trade and technical schools and require about a year to complete. A wide range of certifications are available based upon the type of work that the welder performs. Just some of the skills that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with certain metal thicknesses
  • Work with various types of welds
  • Operate according to contract specifications

As earlier mentioned, various states, cities or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those requiring licensing, some also require certification for various kinds of work. Certification is also a means to demonstrate to employers that you are a highly skilled and experienced welder. So just as with licensing, look into the requirements for your location and make certain that the welder trade school you choose readies you for certification as needed.

Questions to Ask Welding Tech Programs

What to ask Big Pine Key FL welding schoolsOnce you have chosen the credential you want to obtain, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to evaluate schools. As you probably know, there are many welding vocational and trade schools in the Big Pine Key FL area. That’s why it’s essential to establish up front what qualifications your selected school must have. We have previously covered two important ones that many people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As stated, although they are very important qualifications, they are not the only ones that need to be considered. After all, the program you decide on is going to furnish the training that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So following are more factors you may need to consider before picking a welder tech school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welder trade school you pick is accredited by either a national or a regional agency. There are two standard kinds of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school offers, such as Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you select is accredited, not just the school alone. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping ensure that you obtain an excellent education, the accreditation might also help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable in Big Pine Key FL for schools that are not accredited. Finally, for those states or municipalities that require licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited also.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. Numerous welding degree or diploma programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Find out if the schools you are reviewing help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. The schools must have relationships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. More established schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can rely upon for referrals. These programs can help students find employment and develop associations within the Big Pine Key FL welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that start an academic program and finish it. It’s crucial that the welder school you choose has a high completion rate. A lower rate could mean that the students who were in the program were dissatisfied with the training, the teachers, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also an indication of the caliber of training. A higher job placement rate will not only verify that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of Big Pine Key FL employer relationships to assist students obtain employment or apprenticeships upon graduation.

Up-to-date Equipment and Facilities. After you have decreased your selection of welder programs to 2 or 3 options, you should consider going to the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Verify that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are modern. In particular, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be using on the job. If you are not sure what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Big Pine Key FL welding professional if they can give you some pointers.

School Location. Although we previously briefly talked about the importance of location, there are a few additional issues that we need to cover. You should keep in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the welding school you choose must be within driving distance of your Big Pine Key FL home. If you do opt to attend an out-of-state school, besides moving costs there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welding certificate programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school offers an apprenticeship or job placement program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school should be in an area or state where you ultimately will want to work.

Smaller Classes. Personalized instruction is important for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s easy to get overlooked in larger classes and not get much personalized training. Ask what the typical class size is for the welding schools you are looking at. Ask if you can attend some classes so that you can see just how much individual attention the students are getting. While there, talk with several of the students and get their evaluations. Also, speak with some of the trainers and find out what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they have earned.

Flexible Class Schedules. Lots of folks learn a new profession while still working at their present job. Confirm that the class schedules for the schools you are looking at are convenient enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near Big Pine Key FL, make sure that the schools you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only enroll part-time, make sure that the school you decide on offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make up classes if you you miss any because of work, illness or family responsibilities.

Online Welder Training

Big Pine Key FL master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a hands-on kind of vocation, and consequently not very suitable for training online. Having said that, there are a small number of online welding classes offered by specific community colleges and technical schools in the greater Big Pine Key FL area that can count toward a certificate or degree program. These courses mainly deal with such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help give a beginner a basis to start their education and training. However, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials until you actually do it. Clearly that can’t be accomplished online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for seasoned welders that want to advance their expertise or possibly earn a more advanced degree. So if you should discover an online welding certificate or degree program, be very careful and confirm that the majority of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
