  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by technical and trade schools and require about a year to finish. Many Wilmore KY employers not only expect a certificate or degree from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a renowned organization like the American Welding Society (AWS). A variety of certifications are available based on the type of work that the welder performs. Some of the things that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with certain metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific kinds of welds
  • Work according to contract specifications

As already stated, some states, cities or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those requiring licensing, many additionally require certification for different kinds of work. Certification is also a way to demonstrate to employers that you are an extremely skilled and knowledgeable welder. So similarly as with licensing, look into the requirements for your local area and confirm that the welding technical school you decide on preps you for certification as needed.

Questions to Ask Welder Vocational Schools

What to ask Wilmore KY welding schoolsAfter you have decided on the credential you want to earn, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can start to evaluate schools. As you probably know, there are many welding trade and vocational schools in the Wilmore KY area. That’s why it’s important to decide up front what qualifications your school of choice must have. We have already covered a couple of significant ones that most people look at first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As stated, although they are essential qualifications, they are not the only ones that should be considered. After all, the school you choose is going to provide the education that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So below are more factors you might need to consider before selecting a welder technical school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welding tech school you select is accredited by either a national or a regional organization. There are two standard types of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school has, for instance Welding Technology. So make certain that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school itself. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping make sure that you get a quality education, the accreditation may also help in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not offered in Wilmore KY for non-accredited schools. Finally, for those states or municipalities that require licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited also.

Apprenticeship and Job Placement Programs. Many welder degree or certificate programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship upon graduation. Ask if the schools you are considering assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. These schools should have partnerships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. More established schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can rely upon for placements. These programs can help students find employment and establish relationships within the Wilmore KY welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that start an instructional program and complete it. It’s important that the welder program you pick has a high completion rate. A lower rate could indicate that the students who were in the program were unhappy with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also an indication of the quality of training. A higher job placement rate will not only verify that the program has an excellent reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of Wilmore KY employer relationships to assist students secure employment or apprenticeships upon graduation.

Up-to-date Facilities and Equipment. After you have decreased your selection of welding programs to 2 or 3 options, you should consider visiting the campuses to inspect their facilities. Make sure that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with on the job. If you are not sure what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Wilmore KY welding professional if they can give you a few pointers.

School Location. Although we already briefly covered the significance of location, there are a couple of additional issues that we should cover. You should keep in mind that unless you are able to move, the welding program you pick must be within driving distance of your Wilmore KY home. If you do choose to attend an out-of-state school, besides relocation costs there might be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welder degree programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school offers a job placement or apprenticeship program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you ultimately will want to work.

Smaller Classes. Personalized training is important for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s possible to be overlooked in larger classes and not get much personalized training. Ask what the typical class size is for the welder programs you are looking at. Inquire if you can sit in on some classes so that you can experience how much individual attention the students are getting. While there, speak with some of the students and get their feedback. Also, speak with some of the trainers and ask what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they hold.

Flexible Class Schedules. Many people learn a new profession while still working at their present job. Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are looking at are convenient enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evenings or on weekends near Wilmore KY, make sure that the schools you are assessing provide those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, confirm that the school you choose offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any because of illness, work or family responsibilities.

Online Welding Schools

Wilmore KY master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a manual kind of trade, and therefore not very suitable for training online. Having said that, there are a small number of online welding courses offered by certain community colleges and vocational schools in the greater Wilmore KY area that may count toward a degree or certificate program. These classes primarily cover such topics as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a foundation to initiate their training and education. Nevertheless, the most critical point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials unless you actually do it. Clearly that can’t be accomplished online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for seasoned welders that desire to advance their knowledge or possibly attain a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding degree or certificate program, be very careful and make sure that the larger part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
