Welding Degree and Certificate Training Programs

welding car in Walnut Ridge ARThere are multiple options to get training as a welder in a trade or technical school. You can earn a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Technology or Welding Engineering, but are more advanced courses than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Below are short explanations of the most common welding programs offered in the Walnut Ridge AR area.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by technical and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They are more hands-on training in nature, designed primarily to develop welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or additional skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to complete and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology furnishes a more well-rounded education than the diploma or certificate while still providing the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

Many municipalities and states do have licensing prerequisites for welders, so be sure to check for your location of potential employment. If needed, the welding school you choose should prepare you for any licensing examinations that you will need to take in addition to providing the appropriate training to become a professional welder.

Welding Certification Alternatives

welder working in Walnut Ridge AR shopThere are various institutions that provide welding certifications, which assess the skill level and knowledge of those applying. Numerous Walnut Ridge AR employers not only require a degree or certificate from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a renowned organization such as the American Welding Society (AWS). Different certifications are offered based upon the type of work that the welder does. A few of the things that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with certain kinds of welds
  • Perform based on contract specifications

As formerly stated, some cities, states or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those requiring licensing, many additionally require certification for various kinds of work. Certification is also a way to demonstrate to employers that you are an extremely skilled and qualified welder. So just as with licensing, look into the requirements for your local area and verify that the welding trade school you decide on readies you for certification if needed.

Topics to Ask Welding Trade Programs

What to ask Walnut Ridge AR welding schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the credential you want to earn, a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to assess schools. As you probably know, there are many welding trade and technical schools in the Walnut Ridge AR area. That’s why it’s essential to determine up front what qualifications your selected school must have. We have previously covered two important ones that most people look at first, which are location and tuition cost. As stated, although they are very important qualifiers, they are not the only ones that need to be looked at. After all, the program you pick is going to furnish the training that will be the foundation of your new vocation as a welder. So below are more factors you might need to evaluate before choosing a welder technical school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welder tech school you decide on is accredited by either a national or a regional agency. There are two standard types of accreditation. The school may attain Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a single program the school offers, for example Welding Technology. So make certain that the program you select is accredited, not just the school alone. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping ensure that you obtain a superior education, the accreditation may also help in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not offered in Walnut Ridge AR for non-accredited schools. Finally, for those states or local governments that mandate licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited also.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. Many welder degree or diploma programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will help place you in an apprenticeship or a job after graduation. Find out if the schools you are reviewing assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. These schools must have associations with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can rely upon for placements. These programs can help students find employment and establish relationships within the Walnut Ridge AR welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that begin an instructional program and complete it. It’s important that the welding program you select has a high completion rate. A low rate may indicate that the students who enrolled in the program were dissatisfied with the training, the teachers, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the quality of training. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the program has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of Walnut Ridge AR contacts to help students obtain employment or apprenticeships after graduation.

Up-to-date Facilities and Equipment. After you have decreased your choice of welder schools to 2 or 3 options, you should think out going to the campuses to look over their facilities. Confirm that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are modern. Specifically, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be working with in the field. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Walnut Ridge AR welding contractor if they can give you some tips.

School Location. Although we previously briefly talked about the relevance of location, there are a couple of additional points that we should cover. You should remember that unless you have the ability to move, the welding school you choose needs to be within driving distance of your Walnut Ridge AR home. If you do decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, apart from relocation expenses there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welding certificate programs offered by community colleges. Also, if the school provides a job placement or apprenticeship program, often their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school needs to be in a region or state where you subsequently will wish to work.

Smaller Classes. Personalized instruction is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s possible to be overlooked in bigger classes and not get much individualized instruction. Find out what the usual class size is for the welder schools you are considering. Inquire if you can attend a couple of classes so that you can observe just how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, speak with a few of the students and get their opinions. Also, talk to a few of the teachers and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they hold.

Convenient Class Schedules. Many people learn a new profession while still working at their current job. Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evenings or on weekends near Walnut Ridge AR, verify that the schools you are considering provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you decide on offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make up classes if you you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Online Welding Classes

Walnut Ridge AR master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a manual type of profession, and for that reason not very compatible with online training. However, there are some online welding courses offered by various community colleges and technical schools in the greater Walnut Ridge AR area that can count toward a degree or certificate program. These courses primarily cover such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help give a beginner a foundation to start their education and training. Nevertheless, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials unless you actually do it. Clearly that can’t be performed online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for experienced welders that desire to advance their expertise or possibly obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding certificate or degree program, be extremely cautious and verify that the majority of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
