Welder Certificate and Degree Training Classes

welding car in Murfreesboro TNThere are several alternatives available to obtain training as a welder in a trade or technical school. You can earn a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are offered in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced degrees than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Following are brief descriptions of the most prevalent welding programs available in the Murfreesboro TN area.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are normally made available by trade and technical schools and take about a year to complete. They are more hands-on training in nature, designed largely to teach welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or additional skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to complete and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology furnishes a more extensive education than the diploma or certificate while still furnishing the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

Many municipalities and states do have licensing requirements for welders, therefore don’t forget to check for your location of future employment. As required, the welder school you pick should ready you for any licensing exams that you will need to take in addition to supplying the appropriate training to become a qualified welder.

Welding Certification Alternatives

welder working in Murfreesboro TN shopThere are a number of institutions that provide welder certifications, which assess the knowledge and skill level of those applying. Numerous Murfreesboro TN employers not only require a certificate or degree from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a highly regarded organization such as the American Welding Society (AWS). Different certifications are available based on the type of work that the welder does. Some of the skills that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with certain types of welds
  • Operate in compliance with contract specifications

As previously stated, some cities, states or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those mandating licensing, many also require certification for various types of work. Certification is also a way to prove to employers that you are an extremely skilled and experienced welder. So similarly as with licensing, look into the requirements for your location and make sure that the welder vocational school you choose preps you for certification if needed.

Questions to Ask Welder Technical Schools

What to ask Murfreesboro TN welding schoolsAfter you have decided on the credential you would like to attain, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can start to compare schools. As you probably know, there are numerous welding trade and vocational schools in the Murfreesboro TN area. That’s why it’s necessary to establish up front what qualifications your chosen school must have. We have previously covered 2 significant ones that most people look at first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As mentioned, although they are very important qualifications, they are not the only ones that should be looked at. After all, the program you choose is going to provide the training that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So following are some additional factors you may need to evaluate before selecting a welding tech school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welding vocational school you choose is accredited by either a regional or a national agency. There are 2 basic types of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a single program the school offers, for example Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you select is accredited, not just the school itself. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping make sure that you get a superior education, the accreditation might also assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not offered in Murfreesboro TN for schools that are not accredited. Also, for those states or municipalities that require licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited also.

Apprenticeship and Job Placement Programs. Many welder certificate or degree programs are provided combined with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship upon graduation. Find out if the schools you are looking at help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. These schools should have associations with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. More established schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can utilize for placements. These programs can assist students in finding employment and establish relationships within the Murfreesboro TN welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that enroll in an academic program and finish it. It’s essential that the welder program you select has a higher completion rate. A reduced rate could indicate that the students who were in the program were unhappy with the training, the teachers, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the caliber of training. A higher job placement rate will not only verify that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of Murfreesboro TN employer relationships to assist students secure apprenticeships or employment after graduation.

Modern Facilities and Equipment. Once you have limited your selection of welder schools to two or three options, you should consider going to the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Confirm that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with in the field. If you are not sure what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Murfreesboro TN welding contractor if they can give you a few tips.

School Location. Even though we previously briefly talked about the importance of location, there are a couple of additional issues that we should cover. You should remember that unless you are able to move, the welding program you select needs to be within driving distance of your Murfreesboro TN home. If you do opt to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation expenses there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welder degree programs offered by community colleges. Furthermore, if the school provides a job placement or apprenticeship program, often their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you ultimately will desire to work.

Small Classes. Individualized training is important for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s easy to get overlooked in larger classes and not obtain much personalized instruction. Ask what the typical class size is for the welder schools you are considering. Ask if you can attend a few classes so that you can see just how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, talk with a few of the students and get their evaluations. Also, chat with a couple of the trainers and ask what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they have earned.

Convenient Class Schedules. Lots of folks learn a new profession while still working at their present job. Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are convenient enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near Murfreesboro TN, make sure that the schools you are looking at offer those alternatives. If you can only enroll part-time, make sure that the school you choose offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the policy is to make up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family circumstances.

Online Welding Training Programs

Murfreesboro TN master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a manual type of vocation, and consequently not extremely suitable for training online. Even so, there are a few online welding courses offered by certain community colleges and technical schools in the greater Murfreesboro TN area that may be credited toward a degree or certificate program. These classes mainly cover such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help give a beginner a foundation to initiate their education and training. However, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials unless you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be done online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for experienced welders that want to advance their knowledge or possibly attain a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding degree or certificate program, be very careful and make sure that the larger part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.

It is Tennessee's fastest growing major city and one of the fastest growing cities in the country.[10] Murfreesboro is also home to Middle Tennessee State University, the second largest undergraduate university in the state of Tennessee, with 22,729 total students as of fall 2014.[11]
