Welding Certificate and Degree Programs

welding car in Kermit WVThere are several alternatives available to obtain training as a welder in a technical or trade school. You can obtain a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are offered in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced programs than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Below are brief explanations of the most common welding programs available in the Kermit WV area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally offered by technical and trade schools and take about a year to finish. They are more hands-on training in nature, created primarily to teach welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or additional skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to finish and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology provides a more extensive education than the certificate or diploma while still furnishing the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

A number of municipalities and states do have licensing requirements for welders, therefore be sure to check for your location of potential employment. If required, the welder school you select should ready you for any licensing exams that you will have to pass in addition to furnishing the appropriate training to become a qualified welder.

Welding Certification Choices

welder working in Kermit WV shopThere are several organizations that offer welder certifications, which test the skill level and knowledge of those applying. A large number of Kermit WV employers not only require a degree or certificate from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a highly regarded organization like the American Welding Society (AWS). A wide range of certifications are offered based upon the kind of work that the welder performs. A few of the skills that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with certain kinds of welds
  • Operate in compliance with contract specifications

As earlier mentioned, some states, cities or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those mandating licensing, a number also require certification for different types of work. Certification is also a means to prove to employers that you are an exceptionally skilled and qualified welder. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your location and make certain that the welder vocational school you decide on preps you for certification as needed.

Topics to Ask Welding Trade Programs

What to ask Kermit WV welding schoolsAfter you have chosen the credential you would like to attain, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to evaluate schools. As you can imagine, there are many welding trade and vocational schools in the Kermit WV area. That’s why it’s important to decide up front what qualifications your school of choice must have. We have already discussed a couple of important ones that many people consider first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As mentioned, although they are very important qualifications, they are not the only ones that need to be looked at. After all, the school you pick is going to furnish the training that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So following are some additional factors you might want to evaluate before picking a welder trade school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welder technical school you select is accredited by either a national or a regional agency. There are 2 basic types of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school offers, for example Welding Technology. So verify that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school itself. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping ensure that you obtain an excellent education, the accreditation may also assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases unavailable in Kermit WV for schools that are not accredited. Finally, for those states or municipalities that require licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited also.

Job Placement and Apprenticeship Programs. Numerous welding degree or diploma programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship upon graduation. Find out if the schools you are looking at assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. The schools must have relationships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can place their students. More established schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can help students find employment and develop associations within the Kermit WV welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that enroll in an academic program and complete it. It’s crucial that the welding school you select has a higher completion rate. A lower rate could indicate that the students who enrolled in the program were dissatisfied with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also an indication of the quality of training. A higher job placement rate will not only affirm that the program has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of Kermit WV employer relationships to help students obtain apprenticeships or employment upon graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. After you have limited your selection of welder programs to 2 or 3 options, you should think out going to the campuses to inspect their facilities. Make sure that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be taught on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be using on the job. If you are not sure what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Kermit WV welding professional if they can give you some suggestions.

School Location. Even though we previously briefly discussed the importance of location, there are a few additional issues that we need to address. You should remember that unless you have the ability to move, the welder program you choose must be within driving distance of your Kermit WV home. If you do choose to enroll in an out-of-state school, apart from moving costs there might be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly the case for welding degree programs offered by community colleges. Also, if the school provides an apprenticeship or job placement program, often their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school needs to be in a region or state where you ultimately will want to work.

Smaller Classes. Personalized instruction is important for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s possible to get lost in bigger classes and not obtain much personalized training. Ask what the usual class size is for the welding schools you are reviewing. Inquire if you can sit in on a few classes so that you can see how much personal attention the students are receiving. While there, talk with several of the students and get their evaluations. Also, chat with a couple of the instructors and ask what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Flexible Class Schedules. Many people learn a new trade while still working at their current job. Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are looking at are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Kermit WV, confirm that the schools you are assessing offer those choices. If you can only attend part-time, make certain that the school you choose offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the policy is to make up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Online Welding Degree and Certificate Programs

Kermit WV master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a hands-on kind of trade, and consequently not extremely suitable for training online. Even so, there are some online welding programs offered by certain community colleges and vocational schools in the greater Kermit WV area that may count toward a degree or certificate program. These classes mainly deal with such topics as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a foundation to begin their education and training. However, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or use welding materials until you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be performed online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for seasoned welders that want to advance their knowledge or possibly earn a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding degree or certificate program, be very careful and verify that the larger part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
