Welding Certificate and Degree Programs

welding car in Ho Ho Kus NJThere are a number of options available to get training as a welder in a trade or vocational school. You can earn a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are offered in Welding Technology or Welding Engineering, but are more advanced programs than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered along with an apprenticeship program. Below are brief summaries of the most prevalent welding programs available in the Ho Ho Kus NJ area.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by trade and technical schools and require about a year to complete. They are more hands-on training in scope, fashioned mainly to develop welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or specialized skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take 2 years to complete and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology offers a more extensive education than the certificate or diploma while still supplying the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

Some municipalities and states do have licensing prerequisites for welders, so don’t forget to check for your location of future employment. As needed, the welding school you select should prep you for any licensing examinations that you will need to pass in addition to furnishing the proper training to become a qualified welder.

Welder Certification Choices

welder working in Ho Ho Kus NJ shopThere are various institutions that offer welder certifications, which assess the skill level and knowledge of those applying. Many Ho Ho Kus NJ employers not only demand a degree or certificate from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a renowned organization such as the American Welding Society (AWS). A wide range of certifications are available based upon the kind of work that the welder performs. Some of the things that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with certain metal thicknesses
  • Work with certain kinds of welds
  • Perform according to contract specifications

As earlier stated, some states, cities or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those mandating licensing, a number also require certification for different types of work. Certification is also a way to prove to employers that you are an extremely skilled and knowledgeable welder. So similarly as with licensing, look into the requirements for your location and confirm that the welding tech school you select prepares you for certification as needed.

Points to Ask Welder Technical Programs

What to ask Ho Ho Kus NJ welding schoolsWhen you have decided on the credential you want to attain, a certificate, diploma or degree, you can start to assess schools. As you can imagine, there are numerous welder vocational and trade schools in the Ho Ho Kus NJ area. That’s why it’s essential to determine up front what qualifications your selected school must have. We have already covered two important ones that most people look at first, which are location and tuition cost. As stated, although they are very important qualifiers, they are not the only ones that must be considered. After all, the program you choose is going to furnish the instruction that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So following are some additional factors you might want to evaluate before choosing a welding tech school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welding tech school you decide on is accredited by either a regional or a national agency. There are 2 basic kinds of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a specific program the school has, for instance Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you select is accredited, not just the school alone. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping ensure that you get a quality education, the accreditation might also assist in getting financial assistance or student loans, which are often not offered in Ho Ho Kus NJ for schools that are not accredited. Finally, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited as well.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. Many welding certificate or degree programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will assist in placing you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Ask if the schools you are looking at assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. These schools must have relationships with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. Older schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can help students find employment and establish relationships within the Ho Ho Kus NJ welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that enroll in an educational program and finish it. It’s essential that the welding school you choose has a higher completion rate. A low rate might signify that the students who were in the program were dissatisfied with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the quality of training. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of Ho Ho Kus NJ employer relationships to help students obtain employment or apprenticeships after graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. Once you have limited your selection of welding programs to 2 or 3 possibilities, you should consider visiting the campuses to inspect their facilities. Verify that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are modern. Specifically, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be using on the job. If you are unsure what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Ho Ho Kus NJ welding professional if they can give you a few pointers.

School Location. Although we previously briefly talked about the importance of location, there are a couple of additional issues that we should cover. You should keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the welder program you pick must be within commuting distance of your Ho Ho Kus NJ home. If you do opt to attend an out-of-state school, besides relocation costs there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welder certificate programs offered by community colleges. Also, if the school offers an apprenticeship or job placement program, most likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you subsequently will desire to work.

Smaller Classes. Individualized training is important for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s easy to get overlooked in bigger classes and not receive much individualized training. Find out what the usual class size is for the welder programs you are looking at. Inquire if you can sit in on a few classes so that you can witness just how much individual attention the students are getting. While there, speak with a few of the students and get their feedback. Also, chat with a couple of the instructors and ask what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Flexible Class Schedules. Lots of folks learn a new trade while still working at their current job. Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are looking at are flexible enough to satisfy your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Ho Ho Kus NJ, make sure that the schools you are assessing provide those alternatives. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, confirm that the school you pick offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the policy is to make up classes if you you miss any due to work, sickness or family responsibilities.

Online Welder Courses

Ho Ho Kus NJ master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a manual kind of vocation, and for that reason not very compatible with training online. Having said that, there are a small number of online welding classes offered by specific community colleges and trade schools in the greater Ho Ho Kus NJ area that may be credited toward a certificate or degree program. These classes mainly cover such subjects as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help give a beginner a basis to start their training and education. However, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials until you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be done online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for seasoned welders that desire to advance their expertise or possibly attain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding certificate or degree program, be extremely careful and confirm that the bulk of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
