Welder Degree and Certificate Training Classes

welding car in Boone Grove INThere are several alternatives available to receive training as a welder in a trade or vocational school. You can earn a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are offered in Welding Technology or Welding Engineering, but are more advanced courses than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also made available combined with an apprenticeship program. Following are short explanations of the most prevalent welding programs offered in the Boone Grove IN area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually offered by technical and trade schools and require about one year to finish. They are more hands-on training in nature, designed largely to teach welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or supplemental skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take 2 years to finish and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology provides a more well-rounded education than the certificate or diploma while still supplying the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

A number of municipalities and states do have licensing prerequisites for welders, so be sure to find out for your location of potential employment. If required, the welder school you pick should ready you for any licensing exams that you will have to pass in addition to providing the appropriate training to become a professional welder.

Welding Certification Alternatives

welder working in Boone Grove IN shopThere are several organizations that offer welder certifications, which test the skill level and knowledge of those applying. Many Boone Grove IN employers not only expect a certificate or degree from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a respected agency like the American Welding Society (AWS). Different certifications are offered based on the kind of work that the welder does. Just some of the skills that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specified metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific kinds of welds
  • Perform in compliance with contract specifications

As already mentioned, various cities, states or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those mandating licensing, many additionally require certification for different kinds of work. Certification is also a way to demonstrate to employers that you are an exceptionally skilled and qualified welder. So just as with licensing, look into the requirements for your local area and confirm that the welding trade school you decide on prepares you for certification as needed.

Subjects to Ask Welding Technical Programs

What to ask Boone Grove IN welding schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the credential you would like to obtain, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to evaluate schools. As you are no doubt aware, there are numerous welder trade and vocational schools in the Boone Grove IN area. That’s why it’s important to decide up front what qualifications your chosen school must have. We have previously covered a couple of important ones that many people consider first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As stated, although they are very important qualifications, they are not the only ones that should be looked at. After all, the school you select is going to furnish the education that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So following are more factors you may need to consider before picking a welding vocational school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welder tech school you pick is accredited by either a regional or a national organization. There are two basic kinds of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school has, for example Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school itself. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping ensure that you receive an excellent education, the accreditation may also assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not offered in Boone Grove IN for non-accredited schools. Finally, for those states or local governments that mandate licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited as well.

Job Placement and Apprenticeship Programs. Many welder degree or certificate programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Other schools will assist in placing you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Ask if the schools you are reviewing assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. These schools must have partnerships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. Older schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can rely upon for referrals. These programs can help students find employment and develop relationships within the Boone Grove IN welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that begin an academic program and finish it. It’s essential that the welding school you select has a high completion rate. A low rate might signify that the students who joined the program were dissatisfied with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the quality of training. A higher job placement rate will not only affirm that the program has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of Boone Grove IN contacts to help students obtain apprenticeships or employment upon graduation.

Up-to-date Facilities and Equipment. After you have limited your selection of welder schools to two or three options, you should consider going to the campuses to look over their facilities. Verify that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are modern. In particular, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be using on the job. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Boone Grove IN welding professional if they can give you a few pointers.

School Location. Even though we previously briefly covered the importance of location, there are a couple of additional issues that we should address. You should bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the welder school you choose needs to be within commuting distance of your Boone Grove IN home. If you do decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides relocation expenses there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially true for welder certificate programs offered by community colleges. Also, if the school provides a job placement or apprenticeship program, most likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you ultimately will desire to work.

Smaller Classes. Personalized instruction is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s possible to get lost in bigger classes and not obtain much personalized instruction. Ask what the usual class size is for the welding schools you are considering. Ask if you can attend a couple of classes so that you can observe how much individual attention the students are getting. While there, speak with some of the students and get their feedback. Also, talk with some of the teachers and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they hold.

Convenient Class Schedules. Lots of folks learn a new trade while still employed at their current job. Check to see that the class schedules for the programs you are looking at are convenient enough to satisfy your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Boone Grove IN, make certain that the schools you are assessing offer those alternatives. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make up classes if you you miss any because of work, illness or family emergencies.

Online Welding Schools

Boone Grove IN master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a hands-on kind of vocation, and therefore not very compatible with online training. Even so, there are a few online welding programs offered by specific community colleges and vocational schools in the greater Boone Grove IN area that can be credited toward a certificate or degree program. These classes mainly cover such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help give a novice a basis to begin their education and training. Nevertheless, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials until you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be done online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for experienced welders that want to advance their expertise or perhaps obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding degree or certificate program, be very cautious and confirm that the larger part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.

    Boone Grove, Indiana

Boone Grove originated as the Boon Grove Post Office (no "e") on December 28, 1843, about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) northeast of its current location. In 1881–82, the Chicago and Erie Railroad was built through the township and the post office moved to the current location, along with most of the original community members.

The town witnessed its greatest growth between 1890 and 1910. The Modern Woodmen of America Lodge (1908) at the corner of Main Street and County Road 350 West is a reminder of this period. The Porter Township High School was constructed in 1931 on Main Street at Lucretia Street. Although significantly changed with additions, it remains the township's elementary and middle school.

The current Boone Grove High School is not located in the community of Boone Grove, but rather in Valparaiso, Indiana, although 5.5 miles (8.9 km) outside of that city; County Road 260 South 500 West is the school's postal address. The former high school (which is now operates as Boone Grove Elementary and Middle School) is located in Boone Grove adjacent to a farm.
