Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Technology or Welding Engineering, but are more advanced courses than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered along with an apprenticeship program. Below are short descriptions of the most common welding programs offered in the Billings OK area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally made available by technical and trade schools and take about a year to complete. They are more hands-on training in scope, designed largely to teach welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or specialized skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take 2 years to complete and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology offers a more extensive education than the diploma or certificate while still providing the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

Many states and municipalities do have licensing requirements for welders, so don’t forget to find out for your location of potential employment. Welding Certification Choices

welder working in Billings OK shopThere are multiple institutions that provide welder certifications, which assess the skill level and knowledge of those applying. Numerous Billings OK employers not only demand a certificate or degree from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a highly regarded agency such as the American Welding Society (AWS). A variety of certifications are offered dependent on the type of work that the welder does. Some of the skills that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific kinds of welds
  • Work according to contract specifications

As earlier stated, many cities, states or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those requiring licensing, a number also require certification for different kinds of work. Certification is also a way to demonstrate to employers that you are an exceptionally skilled and qualified welder. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and verify that the welding technical school you choose prepares you for certification if needed.

Topics to Ask Welder Vocational Programs

What to ask Billings OK welding schoolsAfter you have chosen the credential you want to earn, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to evaluate schools. As you probably know, there are many welding trade and technical schools in the Billings OK area. That’s why it’s important to decide up front what qualifications your school of choice must have. We have previously covered 2 important ones that many people look at first, which are location and tuition cost. As stated, although they are very important qualifications, they are not the only ones that must be considered. After all, the school you select is going to furnish the education that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So following are some additional factors you might need to evaluate before selecting a welding trade school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welding tech school you select is accredited by either a national or a regional agency. There are two basic types of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a single program the school offers, for instance Welding Technology. So make certain that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school itself. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping make sure that you obtain a quality education, the accreditation can also assist in acquiring financial aid or student loans, which are often not offered in Billings OK for non-accredited schools. Finally, for those states or local governments that mandate licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited as well.

Apprenticeship and Job Placement Programs. Many welder degree or diploma programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will assist in placing you in an apprenticeship or a job upon graduation. Find out if the schools you are looking at assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. These schools must have relationships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can place their students. More established schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can rely upon for referrals. These programs can assist students in finding employment and establish relationships within the Billings OK welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that enroll in an educational program and finish it. It’s essential that the welding program you pick has a higher completion rate. A reduced rate could mean that the students who joined the program were unhappy with the instruction, the teachers, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also an indication of the caliber of training. A higher job placement rate will not only verify that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of Billings OK employer relationships to help students obtain employment or apprenticeships upon graduation.

Modern Facilities and Equipment. After you have decreased your choice of welder programs to two or three options, you should consider going to the campuses to inspect their facilities. Confirm that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be taught on are modern. In particular, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be using on the job. If you are unsure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Billings OK welding professional if they can give you a few tips.

School Location. Even though we previously briefly discussed the importance of location, there are a few additional issues that we should deal with. You should keep in mind that unless you have the ability to move, the welder school you pick needs to be within driving distance of your Billings OK home. If you do choose to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation expenses there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially the case for welding degree programs offered by community colleges. Furthermore, if the school offers a job placement or apprenticeship program, often their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school should be in a region or state where you subsequently will desire to work.

Small Classes. One-on-one training is essential for a manual trade such as welding. It’s possible to get lost in larger classes and not get much individualized training. Find out what the typical class size is for the welding programs you are looking at. Inquire if you can sit in on a couple of classes so that you can experience how much individual attention the students are getting. While there, talk with several of the students and get their evaluations. Similarly, speak with a couple of the instructors and find out what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they hold.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Lots of folks learn a new profession while still employed at their present job. Check to see that the class schedules for the programs you are looking at are convenient enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Billings OK, make sure that the schools you are assessing offer those choices. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you decide on offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the protocol is to make up classes if you you miss any due to work, illness or family circumstances.

Online Welding Certificate and Degree Programs

Billings OK master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a manual type of trade, and for that reason not very suitable for training online. However, there are some online welding classes offered by various community colleges and technical schools in the greater Billings OK area that may count toward a certificate or degree program. These courses primarily deal with such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help give a beginner a basis to initiate their training and education. Nevertheless, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials until you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be performed online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for seasoned welders that want to advance their expertise or possibly earn a more advanced degree. So if you should discover an online welding degree or certificate program, be very careful and make certain that the majority of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.

    Billings, Oklahoma

Billings is a town in northwest Noble County, Oklahoma, United States. The population was 509 at the 2010 census, an increase from 436 at the 2000 census. It was the childhood home of Oklahoma governor Henry Bellmon.[3]

Billings was called "White Rock", when it was founded in 1893, at the time of the Cherokee Strip Land Run. It was then 3 miles (4.8 km) east and 2 miles (3.2 km)south of its present site. Its economy was based on agriculture in the surrounding area. The Enid and Tonkawa Railway (acquired by the Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway in 1900) built a spur line out from North Enid in 1899. The railroad, however, did not go through White Rock, so the residents soon moved to the present location. The new town opened October 23, 1899. The town was renamed for M. O. Billings, a director of the Billings Town Company.[3]

Billings is located at 36°32′06″N 97°25′46″W / 36.535040°N 97.429505°W / 36.535040; -97.429505.[4] It is 35 miles (56 km) from Enid and Ponca City.[3] According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
