Welding Degree and Certificate Training

welding car in Woodbury Heights NJThere are multiple options to receive training as a welder in a technical or trade school. You can obtain a a certificate, a diploma or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Technology or Welding Engineering, but are more advanced courses than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also made available along with an apprenticeship program. Below are brief descriptions of the most typical welding programs available in the Woodbury Heights NJ area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally made available by technical and trade schools and take about 1 year to complete. They are more hands-on training in scope, created largely to teach welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or additional skills for working welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take 2 years to complete and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology provides a more extensive education than the certificate or diploma while still furnishing the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

Many municipalities and states do have licensing requirements for welders, so be sure to find out for your location of future employment. If required, the welder school you pick should prepare you for any licensing exams that you will have to take in addition to furnishing the proper training to become a professional welder.

Welder Certification Choices

welder working in Woodbury Heights NJ shopThere are a number of institutions that offer welding certifications, which assess the skill level and knowledge of those applying. A large number of Woodbury Heights NJ employers not only expect a certificate or degree from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a highly regarded organization such as the American Welding Society (AWS). Different certifications are offered based upon the type of work that the welder performs. A few of the things that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific types of welds
  • Perform in compliance with contract specifications

As formerly mentioned, some states, cities or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those mandating licensing, some additionally require certification for different kinds of work. Certification is also a way to demonstrate to employers that you are an extremely skilled and knowledgeable welder. So similarly as with licensing, look into the requirements for your location and confirm that the welder technical school you choose prepares you for certification as needed.

Points to Ask Welder Tech Programs

What to ask Woodbury Heights NJ welding schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the credential you would like to earn, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can start to compare schools. As you probably know, there are many welder vocational and trade schools in the Woodbury Heights NJ area. That’s why it’s important to determine up front what qualifications your selected school must have. We have previously discussed a couple of important ones that many people look at first, which are location and tuition cost. As stated, although they are very important qualifiers, they are not the only ones that must be considered. After all, the school you choose is going to furnish the education that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So below are more factors you may want to evaluate before selecting a welding trade school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welder vocational school you select is accredited by either a regional or a national organization. There are two standard types of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a single program the school has, such as Welding Technology. So verify that the program you select is accredited, not just the school alone. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping ensure that you receive a quality education, the accreditation can also help in getting financial assistance or student loans, which are frequently not offered in Woodbury Heights NJ for non-accredited schools. Also, for those states or local governments that mandate licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited as well.

Job Placement and Apprenticeship Programs. Many welding diploma or degree programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Various other schools will help place you in an apprenticeship or a job after graduation. Ask if the schools you are considering help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. The schools must have partnerships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can help students find employment and develop relationships within the Woodbury Heights NJ welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that start an educational program and complete it. It’s crucial that the welder program you select has a high completion rate. A lower rate may mean that the students who were in the program were dissatisfied with the training, the teachers, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also an indication of the caliber of training. A higher job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but additionally that it has the network of Woodbury Heights NJ contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or employment after graduation.

Up-to-date Equipment and Facilities. After you have limited your choice of welding programs to two or three options, you should consider visiting the campuses to inspect their facilities. Confirm that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be using in the field. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Woodbury Heights NJ welding professional if they can give you a few suggestions.

School Location. Although we already briefly discussed the importance of location, there are a few additional points that we need to address. You should bear in mind that unless you are able to relocate, the welding school you choose must be within commuting distance of your Woodbury Heights NJ home. If you do decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides moving expenses there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welder degree programs offered by community colleges. Also, if the school offers an apprenticeship or job placement program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school needs to be in a region or state where you ultimately will wish to work.

Small Classes. Individualized training is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s possible to be overlooked in bigger classes and not obtain much individualized training. Ask what the usual class size is for the welder schools you are reviewing. Inquire if you can attend a few classes so that you can witness just how much personal attention the students are receiving. While there, talk with some of the students and get their opinions. Also, talk to a few of the instructors and find out what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they hold.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Some people learn a new profession while still employed at their present job. Check to see that the class schedules for the programs you are looking at are convenient enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near Woodbury Heights NJ, confirm that the schools you are reviewing offer those choices. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the policy is to make up classes should you miss any due to illness, work or family emergencies.

Online Welder Courses

Woodbury Heights NJ master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a hands-on kind of trade, and for that reason not extremely suitable for training online. Having said that, there are some online welding classes offered by specific community colleges and vocational schools in the greater Woodbury Heights NJ area that may be credited toward a certificate or degree program. These classes primarily deal with such topics as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help provide a beginner a foundation to initiate their education and training. Nevertheless, the most critical point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials unless you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be done online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for experienced welders that want to advance their expertise or perhaps earn a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding degree or certificate program, be very careful and make certain that the majority of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
