Welder Degree and Certificate Training Courses

welding car in Webster Springs WVThere are a number of options to obtain training as a welder in a technical or trade school. You can obtain a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Technology or Welding Engineering, but are more advanced programs than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Below are short summaries of the most prevalent welding programs available in the Webster Springs WV area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually made available by trade and technical schools and require about one year to complete. They are more hands-on training in nature, created mainly to develop welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or supplemental skills for working welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to finish and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology furnishes a more extensive education than the diploma or certificate while still providing the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

Some municipalities and states do have licensing prerequisites for welders, therefore be sure to check for your location of future employment. If needed, the welder school you pick should prep you for any licensing examinations that you will have to pass in addition to providing the proper training to become a qualified welder.

Welder Certification Options

welder working in Webster Springs WV shopThere are various institutions that offer welder certifications, which test the knowledge and skill level of those applying. Many Webster Springs WV employers not only demand a degree or certificate from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a respected agency like the American Welding Society (AWS). A variety of certifications are offered based upon the kind of work that the welder does. Some of the skills that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with certain types of welds
  • Operate based on contract specifications

As previously stated, various states, cities or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those requiring licensing, many also require certification for different kinds of work. Certification is also a means to demonstrate to employers that you are a highly skilled and experienced welder. So just as with licensing, look into the requirements for your location and make sure that the welder vocational school you choose prepares you for certification as needed.

Subjects to Ask Welding Technical Programs

What to ask Webster Springs WV welding schoolsWhen you have chosen the credential you would like to obtain, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to compare schools. As you can imagine, there are numerous welder trade and vocational schools in the Webster Springs WV area. That’s why it’s essential to establish in advance what qualifications your school of choice must have. We have already discussed two important ones that most people consider first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As mentioned, although they are essential qualifiers, they are not the only ones that should be considered. After all, the school you select is going to provide the instruction that will be the foundation of your new vocation as a welder. So following are some additional factors you might need to consider before choosing a welder vocational school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welding tech school you pick is accredited by either a regional or a national organization. There are two basic kinds of accreditation. The school may attain Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a single program the school has, such as Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school itself. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping make sure that you receive a superior education, the accreditation may also assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available in Webster Springs WV for non-accredited schools. Also, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited as well.

Apprenticeship and Job Placement Programs. Many welding degree or certificate programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Various other schools will help place you in an apprenticeship or a job upon graduation. Ask if the schools you are reviewing assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. These schools should have relationships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. More established schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can assist students in finding employment and establish relationships within the Webster Springs WV welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that enroll in an instructional program and complete it. It’s crucial that the welder program you choose has a higher completion rate. A low rate might mean that the students who enrolled in the program were unhappy with the instruction, the teachers, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the caliber of training. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the program has an excellent reputation within the industry, but additionally that it has the network of Webster Springs WV contacts to help students secure apprenticeships or employment after graduation.

Modern Facilities and Equipment. After you have narrowed down your choice of welder programs to two or three possibilities, you should consider visiting the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Verify that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be instructed on are up-to-date. In particular, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with in the field. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Webster Springs WV welding professional if they can give you a few pointers.

School Location. Although we previously briefly discussed the significance of location, there are a few additional issues that we should deal with. You should keep in mind that unless you can move, the welder program you choose must be within commuting distance of your Webster Springs WV home. If you do decide to attend an out-of-state school, apart from moving expenses there might be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially true for welder certificate programs offered by community colleges. Furthermore, if the school provides a job placement or apprenticeship program, most likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school should be in an area or state where you ultimately will desire to work.

Smaller Classes. Personalized instruction is essential for a manual trade such as welding. It’s easy to be overlooked in larger classes and not receive much personalized instruction. Find out what the average class size is for the welding programs you are reviewing. Ask if you can attend some classes so that you can see just how much individual attention the students are getting. While there, speak with some of the students and get their feedback. Similarly, speak with some of the instructors and ask what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they hold.

Flexible Class Schedules. Some people learn a new profession while still employed at their current job. Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are looking at are flexible enough to satisfy your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Webster Springs WV, make certain that the schools you are looking at provide those alternatives. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any because of work, illness or family circumstances.

Online Welding Certificate and Degree Programs

Webster Springs WV master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a hands-on type of vocation, and therefore not very suitable for training online. Even so, there are a small number of online welding courses offered by various community colleges and technical schools in the greater Webster Springs WV area that may be credited toward a certificate or degree program. These courses primarily cover such subjects as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a basis to begin their education and training. However, the most important point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials until you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be performed online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for experienced welders that would like to advance their knowledge or possibly earn a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding degree or certificate program, be extremely cautious and make certain that the bulk of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.

    Webster Springs, West Virginia

Addison, commonly known as Webster Springs, is a town in Webster County, West Virginia, United States. Although it was incorporated as Addison in 1892,[6] it is more frequently referred to as Webster Springs, the name of the town's post office.[1] It was named Addison McLaughlin, upon whose land the town was originally laid out.[1] The population was 776 at the 2010 census.[7]

Webster Springs sits at the confluence of the Elk and Back Fork of the Elk Rivers. The town has numerous shops, retail stores, grocery stores, pharmacies, a motel, and several restaurants. Government offices for the municipality, county, and state are available in the town. The town is served by the Addison Public Library and fire service is provided by the Webster Springs Volunteer Fire Department.

The name of the town is officially "Addison", but the community is most often referred to by the name of its post office, "Webster Springs".[8] It is also labeled on some maps as "Addison", and some as "Webster Springs". The unofficial name has gone so far that the county commission's letterhead reads "Webster Springs," rather than "Addison", which it had previously.
