Welder Certificate and Degree Training

welding car in Tribune KSThere are a number of options to obtain training as a welder in a technical or trade school. You can obtain a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are offered in Welding Technology or Welding Engineering, but are more advanced courses than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered along with an apprenticeship program. Following are short explanations of the most common welding programs available in the Tribune KS area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are normally made available by technical and trade schools and require about one year to finish. They are more hands-on training in nature, designed primarily to develop welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or specialized skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to finish and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology furnishes a more extensive education than the diploma or certificate while still furnishing the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

A number of municipalities and states do have licensing requirements for welders, so be sure to find out for your location of potential employment. If needed, the welding school you choose should ready you for any licensing exams that you will have to pass in addition to furnishing the appropriate training to become a professional welder.

Welder Certification Alternatives

welder working in Tribune KS shopThere are multiple institutions that provide welder certifications, which evaluate the knowledge and skill level of those applying. A large number of Tribune KS employers not only require a certificate or degree from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a highly regarded agency like the American Welding Society (AWS). A wide range of certifications are available based upon the kind of work that the welder does. Some of the things that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific kinds of welds
  • Operate in compliance with contract specifications

As earlier stated, some states, cities or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those calling for licensing, some additionally require certification for various kinds of work. Certification is also a way to prove to employers that you are an extremely skilled and knowledgeable welder. So just as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and make sure that the welder tech school you select preps you for certification as needed.

Questions to Ask Welder Trade Programs

What to ask Tribune KS welding schoolsWhen you have decided on the credential you would like to earn, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to evaluate schools. As you can imagine, there are numerous welder trade and vocational schools in the Tribune KS area. That’s why it’s important to decide up front what qualifications your selected school must have. We have previously discussed a couple of important ones that most people look at first, which are location and tuition cost. As stated, although they are essential qualifiers, they are not the only ones that need to be looked at. After all, the program you pick is going to furnish the instruction that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So below are some additional factors you might need to evaluate before picking a welder trade school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welding trade school you choose is accredited by either a regional or a national organization. There are two basic kinds of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a single program the school has, such as Welding Technology. So make sure that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school itself. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping ensure that you obtain a superior education, the accreditation may also assist in getting financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not available in Tribune KS for schools that are not accredited. Also, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited also.

Apprenticeship and Job Assistance Programs. A large number of welder degree or certificate programs are provided combined with an apprenticeship program. Various other schools will assist in placing you in an apprenticeship or a job after graduation. Ask if the schools you are reviewing assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. These schools should have associations with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can rely upon for referrals. These programs can assist students in finding employment and develop relationships within the Tribune KS welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that enroll in an instructional program and finish it. It’s essential that the welder program you select has a higher completion rate. A reduced rate might mean that the students who enrolled in the program were unhappy with the instruction, the instructors, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the quality of training. A higher job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of Tribune KS contacts to help students secure employment or apprenticeships after graduation.

Modern Facilities and Equipment. After you have decreased your selection of welding programs to 2 or 3 options, you should think out going to the campuses to look over their facilities. Confirm that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be taught on are modern. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with in the field. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Tribune KS welding contractor if they can give you some suggestions.

School Location. Although we already briefly discussed the significance of location, there are a couple of additional issues that we need to deal with. You should bear in mind that unless you have the ability to move, the welding school you choose must be within driving distance of your Tribune KS home. If you do opt to attend an out-of-state school, besides moving expenses there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially true for welder certificate programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school offers a job placement or apprenticeship program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school needs to be in a region or state where you subsequently will want to work.

Small Classes. One-on-one training is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s possible to get overlooked in bigger classes and not receive much individualized instruction. Ask what the usual class size is for the welder schools you are reviewing. Ask if you can sit in on some classes so that you can experience how much individual attention the students are getting. While there, talk with a few of the students and get their feedback. Similarly, talk to some of the trainers and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Lots of folks learn a new trade while still employed at their current job. Check to see that the class schedules for the programs you are considering are convenient enough to meet your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evenings or on weekends near Tribune KS, verify that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you pick offers part-time enrollment. Also, find out what the policy is to make up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family circumstances.

Online Welding Training

Tribune KS master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a hands-on type of trade, and therefore not extremely suitable for training online. However, there are a small number of online welding programs offered by certain community colleges and vocational schools in the greater Tribune KS area that can be credited toward a degree or certificate program. These courses mainly cover such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a basis to initiate their training and education. However, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials unless you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be performed online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for experienced welders that desire to advance their knowledge or possibly obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding certificate or degree program, be very cautious and make certain that the larger part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.

    Tribune, Kansas

Tribune was founded in 1886. The railroad depot was built in 1887, at which time Tribune was designated as the county seat.[8] The city is named after the New York Tribune, of which Horace Greeley of Chappaqua, New York was the editor.[9] Greeley encouraged western settlement with the motto "Go West, young man".[10]

As of January 1, 2009, the City of Tribune and Greeley County have operated as a unified government.[11] The resulting government consists of a five-member commission with two members elected by city residents, two by rural residents, and one at-large.[12] Similar to Wyandotte County, the only other consolidated city-county in the state, part of the county was not included: Horace decided against consolidation.[13]

    Tribune is located at 38°28′13″N 101°45′16″W / 38.47028°N 101.75444°W / 38.47028; -101.75444 (38.470288, -101.754489).[14] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.74 square miles (1.92 km2), all land.[1]
