Welder Certificate and Degree Training Courses

welding car in South Lancaster MAThere are several alternatives available to get training as a welder in a trade or vocational school. You can receive a a certificate, a diploma or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Technology or Welding Engineering, but are more advanced degrees than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also made available combined with an apprenticeship program. Below are brief descriptions of the most typical welding programs offered in the South Lancaster MA area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are normally made available by trade and technical schools and require about a year to finish. They are more hands-on training in scope, created primarily to teach welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or supplemental skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take 2 years to complete and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology provides a more extensive education than the certificate or diploma while still supplying the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

A number of states and municipalities do have licensing prerequisites for welders, so make sure to find out for your location of future employment. As needed, the welder school you choose should prepare you for any licensing examinations that you will have to take in addition to supplying the appropriate training to become a qualified welder.

Welding Certification Options

welder working in South Lancaster MA shopThere are several institutions that provide welder certifications, which assess the skill level and knowledge of those applying. Many South Lancaster MA employers not only demand a degree or certificate from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a highly regarded organization such as the American Welding Society (AWS). A variety of certifications are available dependent on the kind of work that the welder performs. A few of the skills that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific kinds of welds
  • Operate according to contract specifications

As formerly stated, many cities, states or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those mandating licensing, many also require certification for various kinds of work. Certification is also a way to demonstrate to employers that you are an extremely skilled and qualified welder. So similarly as with licensing, look into the requirements for your local area and verify that the welding technical school you choose prepares you for certification as needed.

What to Ask Welder Vocational Programs

What to ask South Lancaster MA welding schoolsOnce you have decided on the credential you would like to earn, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can begin to evaluate schools. As you can imagine, there are numerous welder vocational and trade schools in the South Lancaster MA area. That’s why it’s essential to establish in advance what qualifications your selected school must have. We have previously discussed two significant ones that many people look at first, which are location and tuition cost. As stated, although they are essential qualifications, they are not the only ones that must be considered. After all, the school you select is going to furnish the training that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So following are some additional factors you may need to evaluate before picking a welding trade school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welder vocational school you select is accredited by either a national or a regional organization. There are 2 basic types of accreditation. The school may attain Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school offers, such as Welding Technology. So confirm that the program you select is accredited, not just the school itself. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting agency, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping ensure that you receive an excellent education, the accreditation might also assist in securing financial aid or student loans, which are often not offered in South Lancaster MA for schools that are not accredited. Finally, for those states or municipalities that require licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited as well.

Job Assistance and Apprenticeship Programs. A large number of welding degree or certificate programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Various other schools will assist in placing you in an apprenticeship or a job after graduation. Ask if the schools you are reviewing assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. These schools must have associations with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can place their students. More established schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can rely upon for placements. These programs can help students find employment and develop relationships within the South Lancaster MA welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that begin an instructional program and finish it. It’s important that the welder school you choose has a higher completion rate. A reduced rate could indicate that the students who enrolled in the program were unhappy with the instruction, the teachers, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the caliber of training. A higher job placement rate will not only verify that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of South Lancaster MA employer relationships to assist students obtain employment or apprenticeships upon graduation.

Up-to-date Equipment and Facilities. Once you have limited your choice of welder schools to 2 or 3 options, you should think out going to the campuses to look over their facilities. Make sure that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be taught on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with in the field. If you are unsure what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local South Lancaster MA welding professional if they can give you a few suggestions.

School Location. Even though we previously briefly discussed the significance of location, there are a few additional points that we should cover. You should bear in mind that unless you can relocate, the welding school you pick must be within commuting distance of your South Lancaster MA home. If you do decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides moving costs there might be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially true for welder certificate programs offered by community colleges. Also, if the school offers an apprenticeship or job placement program, most likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school should be in an area or state where you subsequently will desire to work.

Small Classes. One-on-one instruction is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s easy to be lost in larger classes and not receive much one-on-one instruction. Find out what the typical class size is for the welder schools you are looking at. Ask if you can sit in on a few classes so that you can witness just how much individual attention the students are receiving. While there, speak with several of the students and get their opinions. Also, chat with a couple of the teachers and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they hold.

Flexible Class Schedules. Lots of folks learn a new trade while still working at their present job. Make sure that the class schedules for the schools you are looking at are convenient enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near South Lancaster MA, make certain that the schools you are reviewing offer those alternatives. If you can only enroll part-time, verify that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the protocol is to make up classes if you you miss any due to illness, work or family emergencies.

Online Welder Courses

South Lancaster MA master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a manual type of trade, and therefore not extremely suitable for training online. Having said that, there are some online welding programs offered by certain community colleges and vocational schools in the greater South Lancaster MA area that can count toward a degree or certificate program. These courses mainly deal with such subjects as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help give a novice a foundation to initiate their training and education. Nevertheless, the most critical point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials until you actually do it. Clearly that can’t be performed online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for experienced welders that desire to advance their knowledge or perhaps attain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding certificate or degree program, be very careful and make certain that the majority of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
