Welding Certificate and Degree Training Programs

welding car in Littlestown PAThere are a number of options available to obtain training as a welder in a trade or technical school. You can earn a diploma, a certificate or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced courses than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also made available combined with an apprenticeship program. Following are short explanations of the most typical welding programs available in the Littlestown PA area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally made available by trade and technical schools and take about a year to complete. They are more hands-on training in scope, created largely to develop welding skills. They can provide a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or supplemental skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to complete and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology furnishes a more extensive education than the diploma or certificate while still furnishing the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

Many states and municipalities do have licensing requirements for welders, so make sure to find out for your location of potential employment. If needed, the welding school you choose should ready you for any licensing exams that you will need to take in addition to furnishing the appropriate training to become a professional welder.

Welder Certification Choices

welder working in Littlestown PA shopThere are several institutions that provide welding certifications, which evaluate the skill level and knowledge of those applying. Many Littlestown PA employers not only demand a degree or certificate from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a renowned agency such as the American Welding Society (AWS). A wide range of certifications are available dependent on the type of work that the welder performs. A few of the things that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with various kinds of welds
  • Work according to contract specifications

As formerly mentioned, some states, cities or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those requiring licensing, a number additionally require certification for various kinds of work. Certification is also a way to demonstrate to employers that you are an exceptionally skilled and experienced welder. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your location and confirm that the welding vocational school you choose preps you for certification as needed.

What to Ask Welder Tech Schools

What to ask Littlestown PA welding schoolsAs soon as you have chosen the credential you want to attain, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can start to evaluate schools. As you can imagine, there are numerous welder trade and technical schools in the Littlestown PA area. That’s why it’s essential to determine in advance what qualifications your chosen school must have. We have already covered 2 important ones that many people look at first, which are location and tuition cost. As mentioned, although they are very important qualifiers, they are not the only ones that need to be considered. After all, the school you select is going to provide the instruction that will be the foundation of your new vocation as a welder. So following are more factors you may need to consider before selecting a welder tech school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welder vocational school you choose is accredited by either a regional or a national agency. There are two basic types of accreditation. The school may attain Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school offers, such as Welding Technology. So make certain that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school itself. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping ensure that you obtain a superior education, the accreditation may also assist in acquiring financial assistance or student loans, which are often not offered in Littlestown PA for schools that are not accredited. Also, for those states or local governments that mandate licensing, they may require that the welding training program be accredited also.

Apprenticeship and Job Placement Programs. A large number of welding degree or certificate programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Some other schools will help place you in an apprenticeship or a job after graduation. Find out if the schools you are considering help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. The schools should have associations with local unions and other metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. Older schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can utilize for placements. These programs can assist students in finding employment and develop associations within the Littlestown PA welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that start an instructional program and complete it. It’s important that the welding program you select has a high completion rate. A lower rate might signify that the students who were in the program were dissatisfied with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also an indication of the caliber of training. A high job placement rate will not only affirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of Littlestown PA contacts to assist students obtain employment or apprenticeships after graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. After you have narrowed down your choice of welding schools to 2 or 3 possibilities, you should consider going to the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Verify that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be taught on are modern. In particular, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be using on the job. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Littlestown PA welding contractor if they can give you some suggestions.

School Location. Although we already briefly talked about the relevance of location, there are a couple of additional issues that we need to cover. You should remember that unless you are able to move, the welder program you pick needs to be within driving distance of your Littlestown PA home. If you do opt to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides moving costs there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially the case for welder certificate programs offered by community colleges. Furthermore, if the school provides a job placement or apprenticeship program, often their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school should be in a region or state where you subsequently will desire to work.

Small Classes. Personalized instruction is essential for a manual trade such as welding. It’s possible to get overlooked in larger classes and not receive much personalized training. Find out what the typical class size is for the welder schools you are considering. Ask if you can sit in on a few classes so that you can observe how much individual attention the students are getting. While there, talk with several of the students and get their feedback. Similarly, chat with some of the trainers and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Convenient Class Schedules. Some people learn a new profession while still working at their present job. Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are convenient enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Littlestown PA, verify that the schools you are looking at provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the protocol is to make up classes should you miss any due to illness, work or family emergencies.

Online Welder Degree and Certificate Programs

Littlestown PA master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a manual type of trade, and consequently not extremely suitable for online training. Having said that, there are a small number of online welding classes offered by various community colleges and vocational schools in the greater Littlestown PA area that can count toward a degree or certificate program. These courses primarily deal with such topics as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help give a novice a foundation to start their training and education. However, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or use welding materials unless you actually do it. Clearly that can’t be done online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for seasoned welders that would like to advance their knowledge or perhaps obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should discover an online welding certificate or degree program, be extremely careful and confirm that the majority of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.
