  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are generally offered by trade and technical schools and take about a year to finish. Welder Certification Choices

welder working in Lewistown OH shopThere are multiple institutions that offer welding certifications, which assess the skill level and knowledge of those applying. A large number of Lewistown OH employers not only expect a degree or certificate from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a highly regarded organization like the American Welding Society (AWS). A variety of certifications are available based on the type of work that the welder performs. A few of the things that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with various types of welds
  • Operate in compliance with contract specifications

As previously stated, various states, cities or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those mandating licensing, some additionally require certification for different kinds of work. Certification is also a means to prove to employers that you are an exceptionally skilled and qualified welder. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and make certain that the welding vocational school you decide on preps you for certification if needed.

Questions to Ask Welding Tech Programs

What to ask Lewistown OH welding schoolsWhen you have decided on the credential you would like to obtain, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can begin to evaluate schools. As you probably know, there are numerous welding trade and vocational schools in the Lewistown OH area. That’s why it’s important to determine up front what qualifications your selected school must have. We have already covered 2 significant ones that most people look at first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As mentioned, although they are essential qualifications, they are not the only ones that need to be looked at. After all, the school you choose is going to furnish the instruction that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So below are more factors you might need to evaluate before selecting a welder trade school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welding technical school you decide on is accredited by either a national or a regional agency. There are 2 basic types of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school has, such as Welding Technology. So make certain that the program you choose is accredited, not just the school alone. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). Besides helping make sure that you receive a superior education, the accreditation may also help in getting financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available in Lewistown OH for non-accredited schools. Also, for those states or municipalities that require licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited also.

Job Placement and Apprenticeship Programs. Many welder diploma or degree programs are offered combined with an apprenticeship program. Various other schools will help place you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Find out if the schools you are reviewing assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. The schools must have partnerships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. More established schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can rely upon for placements. These programs can help students find employment and establish associations within the Lewistown OH welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that enroll in an academic program and finish it. It’s crucial that the welder school you choose has a high completion rate. A lower rate may signify that the students who were in the program were unhappy with the instruction, the instructors, or the facilities, and quit. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the caliber of training. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the program has an excellent reputation within the field, but additionally that it has the network of Lewistown OH employer relationships to help students secure apprenticeships or employment after graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. Once you have narrowed down your choice of welding schools to 2 or 3 possibilities, you should think out going to the campuses to inspect their facilities. Confirm that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be instructed on are modern. In particular, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be working with on the job. If you are uncertain what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Lewistown OH welding contractor if they can give you a few pointers.

School Location. Although we previously briefly talked about the importance of location, there are a couple of additional points that we need to address. You should keep in mind that unless you can relocate, the welding program you pick needs to be within driving distance of your Lewistown OH home. If you do decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, besides relocation expenses there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welding degree programs offered by community colleges. Also, if the school provides a job placement or apprenticeship program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school needs to be in a region or state where you subsequently will want to work.

Smaller Classes. Individualized instruction is important for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s easy to be overlooked in larger classes and not get much personalized instruction. Find out what the typical class size is for the welder programs you are considering. Inquire if you can attend some classes so that you can see just how much personal attention the students are getting. While there, speak with some of the students and get their feedback. Also, talk to a couple of the teachers and find out what their welding experience has been and what credentials and certifications they have earned.

Flexible Class Schedules. Some people learn a new profession while still working at their present job. Verify that the class schedules for the programs you are considering are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near Lewistown OH, make sure that the schools you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only enroll part-time, make sure that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make up classes should you miss any because of work, sickness or family circumstances.

Online Welding Degree and Certificate Programs

Lewistown OH master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a manual type of profession, and consequently not very suitable for training online. However, there are a few online welding programs offered by certain community colleges and vocational schools in the greater Lewistown OH area that may be credited toward a certificate or degree program. These courses primarily cover such topics as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help give a beginner a basis to start their training and education. Nevertheless, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials unless you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be done online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for seasoned welders that would like to advance their expertise or possibly obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding degree or certificate program, be extremely cautious and verify that the majority of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.

    Lewistown, Ohio

Lewistown (also Lewis Town or Lewiston)[1] is a census-designated place in central Washington Township, Logan County, Ohio, United States.[2] Until the 1829 Treaty of Lewistown, the community was the site of a Shawnee settlement. It is said to have been named in honor of “Captain” John Lewis, a Shawnee leader.[3] Nearby Indian Lake was once known as the Lewistown Reservoir, after this settlement. Although it is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 43333.[4] The population of the ZCTA for ZIP code 43333 was 693 at the 2000 census.

The area around Lewistown was populated by several Native American tribes resettled as a result of the Treaty of Fort Meigs. This treaty, signed on September 29, 1817 also provided for the University of Michigan, as well as other grants.

In the 1820s Lewistown was a village primarily inhabited by Seneca and Shawnee people. It was also the eastern point in a reservation for these groups that stretched westward to the headwaters of Loramie Creek.[5]
