Welding Degree and Certificate Training

welding car in La Belle MOThere are multiple options to receive training as a welder in a trade or vocational school. You can earn a a certificate, a diploma or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced courses than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Below are short explanations of the most common welding programs offered in the La Belle MO area.

  • Diploma and Certificate Programs are normally offered by trade and technical schools and take about one year to finish. They are more hands-on training in nature, created largely to develop welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or additional skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to finish and are usually offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology provides a more extensive education than the certificate or diploma while still furnishing the foundation that prepares students to enter the workforce.

A number of states and municipalities do have licensing prerequisites for welders, therefore be sure to find out for your location of potential employment. If required, the welder school you choose should ready you for any licensing exams that you will need to pass in addition to providing the appropriate training to become a professional welder.

Welding Certification Options

welder working in La Belle MO shopThere are a number of institutions that provide welding certifications, which test the knowledge and skill level of those applying. Many La Belle MO employers not only demand a degree or certificate from an accredited welding program, but also certification from a highly regarded organization like the American Welding Society (AWS). A wide range of certifications are available dependent on the type of work that the welder does. Some of the things that certification can attest to are the welder’s ability to

  • Work in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specific metal thicknesses
  • Work with specific kinds of welds
  • Work based on contract specifications

As earlier stated, some states, cities or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those mandating licensing, some also require certification for various kinds of work. Certification is also a means to prove to employers that you are an exceptionally skilled and experienced welder. So just as with licensing, look into the requirements for your location and make sure that the welder vocational school you choose readies you for certification as needed.

Subjects to Ask Welder Technical Schools

What to ask La Belle MO welding schoolsAfter you have chosen the credential you would like to earn, a certificate, diploma or degree, you can begin to assess schools. As you can imagine, there are a large number of welding vocational and trade schools in the La Belle MO area. That’s why it’s essential to establish in advance what qualifications your chosen school must have. We have already covered two significant ones that most people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As mentioned, although they are very important qualifications, they are not the only ones that should be considered. After all, the school you pick is going to furnish the education that will be the foundation of your new career as a welder. So below are some additional factors you might need to consider before selecting a welder trade school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welder technical school you select is accredited by either a national or a regional organization. There are 2 basic types of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a single program the school offers, such as Welding Technology. So make certain that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school alone. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, such as the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping make sure that you get an excellent education, the accreditation can also help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are often not available in La Belle MO for schools that are not accredited. Finally, for those states or municipalities that require licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited as well.

Job Placement and Apprenticeship Programs. A large number of welding degree or diploma programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Various other schools will assist in placing you in a job or an apprenticeship after graduation. Ask if the schools you are considering help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. These schools must have relationships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. More established schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can assist students in finding employment and establish relationships within the La Belle MO welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that start an educational program and complete it. It’s essential that the welding program you choose has a higher completion rate. A reduced rate could mean that the students who were in the program were unhappy with the instruction, the instructors, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also a good indicator of the caliber of training. A high job placement rate will not only verify that the program has an excellent reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of La Belle MO employer relationships to assist students obtain apprenticeships or employment after graduation.

Up-to-date Equipment and Facilities. After you have narrowed down your choice of welding programs to 2 or 3 options, you should think out visiting the campuses to inspect their facilities. Confirm that both the facilities and the equipment that you will be trained on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be using in the field. If you are unsure what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local La Belle MO welding contractor if they can give you some suggestions.

School Location. Although we previously briefly discussed the importance of location, there are a few additional issues that we need to deal with. You should bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the welding school you pick needs to be within commuting distance of your La Belle MO home. If you do choose to enroll in an out-of-state school, in addition to moving expenses there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly the case for welding degree programs offered by community colleges. Additionally, if the school offers an apprenticeship or job placement program, often their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school should be in an area or state where you subsequently will want to work.

Smaller Classes. Individualized instruction is important for a manual trade such as welding. It’s possible to get overlooked in bigger classes and not receive much personalized instruction. Find out what the average class size is for the welding schools you are looking at. Ask if you can sit in on a few classes so that you can witness just how much individual attention the students are getting. While there, speak with some of the students and get their feedback. Also, speak with some of the instructors and ask what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they have earned.

Flexible Class Schedules. Lots of folks learn a new trade while still employed at their current job. Check to see that the class schedules for the schools you are looking at are convenient enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes in the evenings or on weekends near La Belle MO, confirm that the schools you are reviewing provide those options. If you can only attend part-time, confirm that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the policy is to make up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family responsibilities.

Online Welder Schools

La Belle MO master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a hands-on kind of profession, and for that reason not very compatible with online training. Having said that, there are a small number of online welding courses offered by certain community colleges and vocational schools in the greater La Belle MO area that may count toward a certificate or degree program. These classes primarily deal with such subjects as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a basis to initiate their training and education. However, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials until you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be performed online. These skills need to be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for seasoned welders that desire to advance their expertise or possibly obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should discover an online welding certificate or degree program, be very careful and make certain that the majority of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
