Welding Degree and Certificate Training Courses

welding car in Connersville INThere are multiple options to obtain training as a welder in a trade or technical school. You can earn a a certificate, a diploma or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Technology or Welding Engineering, but are more advanced degrees than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also offered along with an apprenticeship program. Below are brief summaries of the most prevalent welding programs available in the Connersville IN area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are usually made available by technical and trade schools and require about a year to finish. They are more hands-on training in scope, created mainly to develop welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or supplemental skills for working welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take two years to finish and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology provides a more well-rounded education than the diploma or certificate while still supplying the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

A number of municipalities and states do have licensing requirements for welders, therefore make sure to find out for your location of potential employment. If needed, the welder school you pick should ready you for any licensing exams that you will need to pass in addition to providing the proper training to become a qualified welder.

Welding Certification Alternatives

welder working in Connersville IN shopThere are various institutions that offer welder certifications, which evaluate the skill level and knowledge of those applying. A large number of Connersville IN employers not only require a degree or certificate from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a renowned organization such as the American Welding Society (AWS). A variety of certifications are available based on the type of work that the welder does. A few of the skills that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with certain metal thicknesses
  • Work with certain kinds of welds
  • Work based on contract specifications

As earlier stated, many cities, states or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those mandating licensing, a number additionally require certification for different types of work. Certification is also a way to demonstrate to employers that you are an exceptionally skilled and experienced welder. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and make certain that the welder trade school you decide on preps you for certification if needed.

Questions to Ask Welder Technical Schools

What to ask Connersville IN welding schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the credential you would like to obtain, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can start to assess schools. As you can imagine, there are many welding trade and vocational schools in the Connersville IN area. That’s why it’s necessary to determine up front what qualifications your chosen school must have. We have previously discussed a couple of important ones that many people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As stated, although they are essential qualifications, they are not the only ones that should be considered. After all, the program you decide on is going to provide the education that will be the foundation of your new profession as a welder. So below are more factors you may need to evaluate before selecting a welding tech school.

Accreditation. It’s essential that the welder trade school you pick is accredited by either a regional or a national agency. There are two basic kinds of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on a single program the school offers, for example Welding Technology. So make sure that the program you select is accredited, not just the school alone. Also, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting agency, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping make sure that you get a quality education, the accreditation may also assist in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are in many cases not offered in Connersville IN for schools that are not accredited. Also, for those states or municipalities that mandate licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited as well.

Job Placement and Apprenticeship Programs. A large number of welding diploma or degree programs are offered in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Various other schools will help place you in an apprenticeship or a job after graduation. Find out if the schools you are considering help in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. These schools must have partnerships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can place their students. Older schools may have a more substantial network of graduates that they can rely upon for placements. These programs can assist students in finding employment and develop associations within the Connersville IN welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the percentage of students that start an instructional program and complete it. It’s essential that the welding program you pick has a high completion rate. A low rate might mean that the students who joined the program were dissatisfied with the training, the teachers, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also an indication of the quality of training. A higher job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the trade, but also that it has the network of Connersville IN employer relationships to help students secure employment or apprenticeships after graduation.

Modern Facilities and Equipment. Once you have decreased your selection of welder programs to 2 or 3 options, you should consider going to the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Confirm that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be instructed on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be comparable to what you will be using in the field. If you are not sure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. If not, ask a local Connersville IN welding contractor if they can give you a few tips.

School Location. Although we previously briefly discussed the relevance of location, there are a couple of additional issues that we need to cover. You should bear in mind that unless you are able to move, the welder school you select needs to be within driving distance of your Connersville IN home. If you do decide to enroll in an out-of-state school, apart from relocation expenses there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially true for welding diploma programs offered by community colleges. Also, if the school offers a job placement or apprenticeship program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school should be in a region or state where you subsequently will wish to work.

Smaller Classes. One-on-one training is essential for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s easy to be overlooked in larger classes and not get much personalized training. Find out what the usual class size is for the welding programs you are considering. Ask if you can attend a couple of classes so that you can witness how much personal attention the students are receiving. While there, talk with a few of the students and get their opinions. Similarly, chat with a couple of the instructors and ask what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they hold.

Flexible Class Schedules. Some people learn a new profession while still employed at their current job. Make sure that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only go to classes in the evenings or on weekends near Connersville IN, make certain that the schools you are reviewing offer those options. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, confirm that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make up classes if you you miss any because of work, sickness or family circumstances.

Online Welding Training Programs

Connersville IN master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a manual type of trade, and therefore not extremely suitable for training online. Having said that, there are a small number of online welding classes offered by certain community colleges and trade schools in the greater Connersville IN area that can count toward a certificate or degree program. These courses primarily deal with such subjects as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help give a novice a basis to begin their education and training. However, the most significant point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials until you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be accomplished online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is better suited for seasoned welders that want to advance their knowledge or perhaps earn a more advanced degree. So if you should come across an online welding degree or certificate program, be extremely cautious and make sure that the greater part of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.

Classes need to be smaller in size and every student must have their personal welding machine to train on. Classroom instruction needs to provide a real-world frame of reference, and the course of study should be current and conform with industry standards. Training programs differ in length and the type of credential provided, so you will need to ascertain what length of program and degree or certificate will best fulfill your needs. Each training program offers different possibilities for certification also. Perhaps the best means to research your short list of schools is to check out each campus and talk with the students and faculty. Invest some time to monitor some classes.
