  • Operate in compliance with specific codes

As previously stated, many states, cities or local municipalities have licensing requirements for welders. Of those mandating licensing, some additionally require certification for various types of work. So similarly as with licensing, check the requirements for your local area and verify that the welder trade school you decide on prepares you for certification as needed.

What to Ask Welder Tech Schools

What to ask Corunna MI welding schoolsAfter you have chosen the credential you would like to earn, a diploma, certificate or degree, you can start to assess schools. As you probably know, there are numerous welding vocational and trade schools in the Corunna MI area. That’s why it’s necessary to decide up front what qualifications your school of choice must have. We have previously covered 2 significant ones that many people look at first, which are location and the cost of tuition. As stated, although they are essential qualifiers, they are not the only ones that should be looked at. After all, the program you choose is going to provide the instruction that will be the foundation of your new vocation as a welder. So following are some additional factors you might need to evaluate before selecting a welder technical school.

Accreditation. It’s extremely important that the welder tech school you decide on is accredited by either a national or a regional agency. There are two standard kinds of accreditation. The school may receive Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school offers, such as Welding Technology. So make sure that the program you pick is accredited, not just the school alone. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education recognized accrediting organization, for example the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping ensure that you receive a superior education, the accreditation might also help in obtaining financial aid or student loans, which are frequently unavailable in Corunna MI for non-accredited schools. Finally, for those states or local governments that require licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited also.

Job Assistance and Apprenticeship Programs. A large number of welder certificate or degree programs are provided combined with an apprenticeship program. Various other schools will help place you in an apprenticeship or a job upon graduation. Ask if the schools you are reviewing assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job assistance program. The schools should have partnerships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can refer their students. Older schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can utilize for referrals. These programs can assist students in finding employment and develop associations within the Corunna MI welding community.

Job Placement and Completion Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that begin an instructional program and finish it. It’s crucial that the welding program you choose has a high completion rate. A reduced rate may indicate that the students who were in the program were unhappy with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also an indication of the caliber of training. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has an excellent reputation within the industry, but also that it has the network of Corunna MI employer relationships to assist students obtain apprenticeships or employment after graduation.

Modern Equipment and Facilities. After you have decreased your selection of welding schools to two or three options, you should think out visiting the campuses to inspect their facilities. Make sure that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be instructed on are modern. In particular, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be working with on the job. If you are not sure what to look for, and are currently in an apprenticeship program, consult with the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Corunna MI welding contractor if they can give you a few tips.

School Location. Even though we already briefly discussed the importance of location, there are a couple of additional points that we should cover. You should remember that unless you have the ability to relocate, the welding school you pick needs to be within commuting distance of your Corunna MI home. If you do choose to attend an out-of-state school, besides moving expenses there could be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is especially the case for welding diploma programs offered by community colleges. Furthermore, if the school offers an apprenticeship or job placement program, often their placements are within the school’s local community. So the location of the school needs to be in an area or state where you ultimately will wish to work.

Small Classes. One-on-one training is essential for a manual trade such as welding. It’s possible to be lost in larger classes and not obtain much individualized instruction. Ask what the typical class size is for the welding schools you are considering. Ask if you can attend a couple of classes so that you can experience just how much individual attention the students are getting. While there, talk with some of the students and get their opinions. Similarly, talk to a few of the trainers and ask what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they have earned.

Flexible Class Scheduling. Many people learn a new trade while still employed at their present job. Check to see that the class schedules for the programs you are considering are flexible enough to fulfill your needs. If you can only attend classes at night or on weekends near Corunna MI, confirm that the schools you are looking at provide those alternatives. If you can only attend on a part-time basis, verify that the school you select offers part-time enrollment. Also, check to see what the policy is to make up classes should you miss any due to work, illness or family emergencies.

Online Welding Training Programs

Corunna MI master welder attending online welding classesWelding is truly a hands-on type of profession, and for that reason not extremely compatible with online training. However, there are a small number of online welding courses offered by certain community colleges and technical schools in the greater Corunna MI area that may be credited toward a certificate or degree program. These classes mainly deal with such topics as reading blueprints, safety,, and metallurgy. They can help provide a beginner a foundation to begin their education and training. However, the most critical point is that you can’t learn how to weld or work with welding materials until you actually do it. Naturally that can’t be performed online. These skills have to be learned in an on-campus environment or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for experienced welders that want to advance their expertise or perhaps attain a more advanced degree. So if you should find an online welding certificate or degree program, be very careful and make certain that the majority of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of environment.
