You can receive a a certificate, a diploma or an Associate Degree. Bachelor Degrees are available in Welding Engineering or Welding Technology, but are more advanced programs than most journeyman welders will need. Some programs are also made available combined with an apprenticeship program. Below are brief summaries of the most prevalent welding programs available in the Valley Lee MD area.

  • Certificate and Diploma Programs are generally made available by trade and technical schools and require about 1 year to finish. They are more hands-on training in nature, designed primarily to develop welding skills. They can furnish a good foundation for a new journeyman or apprentice welder, or specialized skills for experienced welders.
  • Associate Degree Programs will take 2 years to finish and are most often offered by community colleges. An Associate Degree in Welding Technology provides a more well-rounded education than the diploma or certificate while still furnishing the foundation that readies students to enter the workforce.

Many municipalities and states do have licensing requirements for welders, so be sure to check for your location of potential employment. If required, the welding school you choose should prep you for any licensing exams that you will have to pass in addition to providing the proper training to become a qualified welder.

Welding Certification Alternatives

welder working in Valley Lee MD shopThere are various institutions that provide welding certifications, which test the skill level and knowledge of those applying. A large number of Valley Lee MD employers not only demand a degree or certificate from an accredited welding school, but also certification from a highly regarded agency such as the American Welding Society (AWS). Different certifications are offered dependent on the kind of work that the welder does. Some of the skills that certification can acknowledge are the welder’s ability to

  • Operate in compliance with specific codes
  • Work with specified metal thicknesses
  • Work with certain types of welds
  • Perform in compliance with contract specifications

As formerly mentioned, some cities, states or local municipalities have licensing mandates for welders. Of those requiring licensing, a number additionally require certification for different kinds of work. Certification is also a means to demonstrate to employers that you are an extremely skilled and qualified welder. So just as with licensing, look into the requirements for your local area and confirm that the welder trade school you select preps you for certification as needed.

Topics to Ask Welding Tech Schools

What to ask Valley Lee MD welding schoolsAs soon as you have decided on the credential you would like to obtain, a degree, certificate or diploma, you can begin to evaluate schools. As you probably know, there are many welding trade and vocational schools in the Valley Lee MD area. That’s why it’s important to determine up front what qualifications your school of choice must have. We have previously covered 2 important ones that most people consider first, which are location and tuition cost. As mentioned, although they are essential qualifications, they are not the only ones that should be considered. After all, the school you select is going to furnish the instruction that will be the foundation of your new vocation as a welder. So following are some additional factors you may want to consider before selecting a welding technical school.

Accreditation. It’s very important that the welding vocational school you choose is accredited by either a national or a regional organization. There are 2 standard types of accreditation. The school may earn Institutional Accreditation based on all of their programs. Programmatic Accreditation is based on an individual program the school has, for example Welding Technology. So make sure that the program you select is accredited, not just the school itself. Additionally, the accreditation should be by a U.S. Department of Education acknowledged accrediting organization, like the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges of Technology (ACCSCT). In addition to helping make sure that you obtain a superior education, the accreditation can also help in obtaining financial assistance or student loans, which are in many cases not available in Valley Lee MD for schools that are not accredited. Also, for those states or municipalities that require licensing, they may require that the welder training program be accredited as well.

Job Placement and Apprenticeship Programs. Numerous welder degree or diploma programs are provided in conjunction with an apprenticeship program. Various other schools will help place you in an apprenticeship or a job upon graduation. Ask if the schools you are considering assist in placing students in apprenticeships or have a job placement program. The schools must have partnerships with local unions and various metal working businesses to which they can place their students. More established schools may have a larger network of graduates that they can rely upon for referrals. These programs can help students find employment and establish associations within the Valley Lee MD welding community.

Completion and Job Placement Rates. The completion rate is the portion or percentage of students that enroll in an academic program and finish it. It’s crucial that the welding program you select has a higher completion rate. A low rate could signify that the students who joined the program were dissatisfied with the training, the instructors, or the facilities, and dropped out. The job placement rate is also an indication of the caliber of training. A high job placement rate will not only confirm that the school has a good reputation within the field, but also that it has the network of Valley Lee MD contacts to help students secure employment or apprenticeships after graduation.

Up-to-date Facilities and Equipment. After you have limited your choice of welder programs to two or three options, you should think out visiting the campuses to evaluate their facilities. Make sure that both the equipment and the facilities that you will be taught on are up-to-date. Specifically, the training equipment should be similar to what you will be using on the job. If you are not sure what to look for, and are already in an apprenticeship program, ask the master welder you are working under for guidance. Otherwise, ask a local Valley Lee MD welding contractor if they can give you some pointers.

School Location. Although we previously briefly talked about the significance of location, there are a couple of additional points that we should address. You should remember that unless you have the ability to move, the welder program you choose needs to be within driving distance of your Valley Lee MD home. If you do opt to attend an out-of-state school, in addition to relocation expenses there may be higher tuition fees for out-of-state residents. This is particularly true for welder certificate programs offered by community colleges. Furthermore, if the school provides a job placement or apprenticeship program, more than likely their placements are within the school’s regional community. So the location of the school should be in a region or state where you subsequently will desire to work.

Smaller Classes. Individualized instruction is important for a hands-on trade such as welding. It’s easy to get overlooked in larger classes and not obtain much one-on-one training. Find out what the average class size is for the welder schools you are considering. Inquire if you can sit in on some classes so that you can witness just how much individual attention the students are getting. While there, talk with several of the students and get their feedback. Also, talk with some of the trainers and find out what their welding experience has been and what certifications and credentials they have earned.

Flexible Class Schedules. Some people learn a new profession while still working at their current job. Confirm that the class schedules for the programs you are reviewing are flexible enough to meet your needs. If you can only go to classes at night or on weekends near Valley Lee MD, make sure that the schools you are looking at offer those alternatives. If you can only enroll on a part-time basis, make certain that the school you choose offers part-time enrollment. Also, ask what the policy is to make up classes if you you miss any because of work, sickness or family responsibilities.

Online Welding Schools

Valley Lee MD master welder attending online welding classesWelding is very much a manual type of trade, and for that reason not extremely suitable for training online. Even so, there are a few online welding classes offered by certain community colleges and vocational schools in the greater Valley Lee MD area that can be credited toward a certificate or degree program. These courses mainly cover such subjects as safety, reading blueprints, and metallurgy. They can help provide a novice a basis to start their education and training. However, the most critical point is that you can’t learn how to weld or handle welding materials unless you actually do it. Obviously that can’t be performed online. These skills must be learned in an on-campus setting or in an apprenticeship. Online or distance learning is more appropriate for experienced welders that want to advance their expertise or possibly obtain a more advanced degree. So if you should discover an online welding certificate or degree program, be extremely cautious and verify that the bulk of the training is done on campus or in a workshop type of setting.

    Peter Egeli

Peter Egelli had his early schooling in Cheverly, MD, and then was home-schooled, with the Calvert system, until he was 14. He attended Charlotte Hall Military Academy before entering Great Mills High School where he graduated in 1952. Peter entered George Washington University and the Corcoran School of Art, where he studied with Eugene Weisz and Edmund Archer, and later joined the United States Marine Corps in 1953. He was stationed at Marine Barracks 8th & I in Washington, D. C., where he was an illustrator, with such duties as sketches for the Friday evening parades, and an instructor drawing training aids. After his tour of duty, Peter entered Maryland Institute College of Art in 1956 where he studied with Jacques Maroger and won the Senior Concours. He then headed to New York for additional training at the Arts Student’s League where he studied with Robert Brackman. Peter returned to George Washington University to get his remaining academic requirements and then to Maryland Institute for graduation.

He returned to his family home in Valley Lee to begin his career in painting. Several large portrait commissions came his way as well as copy work done for his father, Bjorn Egeli, a well-known portrait painter. In the fall of 1960, Peter began teaching art part-time at St. Mary’s Seminary (now St. Mary’s College of Maryland) while he continued with his studio work. At the same time he became the President of the St. Mary’s County Art Association, which held large art exhibits at the college. It was during this time that Peter met Elizabeth Stuart (Stu) Wilkinson, who was also exhibiting. They were married in 1963 and began a life together in the arts.

Peter insisted on sittings with his portrait clients so that he could capture more of their “spirit” than just using a photograph. He enjoyed the time during the sittings where he would refine his work while talking with his sitter until he felt that he had obtained just the right representation in front of him.
